Measurement

Length and Perimeter

Learning Goals
● Become familiar with academic vocabulary

● Convert between units of length

● Find the perimeter of polygons and circles

What do you think of when you see the words Measurement,
Length and Area
Glossary
Length The distance between two (2) points

Perimeter A measure of the distance around a shape

Circumference The perimeter (or distance around the outside) of a circle

Radius A straight line from the centre of a circle to any point on

the circumference
Diameter A straight line that passes through the centre of a circle
and whose endpoints lie on the circumference
Sum The total amount resulting from the addition of two or
more numbers
Polygon A 2-dimensional shape with straight lines

Area Is a measure of the square units that fit within a shape

Length
The metre (m) is the base unit for length in the metric
system.
From the metre, other units of length were devised to
measure smaller and larger distances:

1 kilometre (km) = 1000 metres

1 centimetre (cm) = 1/100 metres

1 millimetre (mm) = 1/1000 metres

When we convert from a smaller

When we convert from a larger
unit to a larger unit, there
unit to a smaller unit, there will
will be less of the larger
be more smaller units, so we
units, so we must divide.
must multiply.
For example:
For example:
2000m = (2000 ÷ 1000)
2m = (2 x 100) cm
km
= 200cm
= 2km
Example

a. 3.2m b. 423 mm c. 6 km

= (3.2 x 100) cm = (423 ÷ 10) cm) = (6 x 1000) m

= 6000 m
= 320cm = 42.3cm
= (6000 x 100) cm
= 600,000 cm
Questions
Example

= (3 x 1000)m + 350m + (220 ÷ 100)m

=3000m + 350m + 2.2m

= 3352.5m

Example

a) b) c)

=3+6+3+6 = 12cm + 9cm + 10cm = 6cm + 6cm + 6cm +11cm

= 18 units = 31cm = (6cm x 3) + 11cm

= 29cm

The diameter of a circle is the distance across the

circle measured through its centre.

The radius of a circle is the distance between a point

on the circle and the centre. The radius is half the
length of the diameter.

The circumference of a circle is the perimeter or

length around its boundary.

Circumference
Whenever the circumference of a circle is
divided by its diameter, the answer is always
the same.
