Involving Volume of a Cube and
Rectangular Prism
What is a VOLUME?
Volume is measured in "cubic" units. The
volume of a figure is the number of cubes
required to fill it completely, like blocks in a
box.
Volume of a Cube
To derive the formula in finding the volume of a cube,
MULTIPLY the THREE SIDES
 V = s × s× s or V = s3
V = cu. cm, cu. in, cu. m / cm3, in3, m3
Volume of a Cube
Example. Derive the formula of a cube

◦ V=sxsxs

V = 6cm x 6 cm x 6cm
Volume of a Cube
Give the formula for the given data
1. Sides: 5 cm V=sxsxs V = 5cm x 5cm x 5cm
2. Sides: 25 cm V = s x s x s V = 25cm x 25cm x 25cm
Volume of a Rectangular Prism
 To derive the formula of a rectangular prism, MULTIPLE
the LENGTH, WIDTH and the HEIGHT.
V=lxwxh
V = cu. cm, cu. in, cu. m / cm3, in3, m3
Volume of a Rectangular Prism
Example. Derive the formula of Rectangular Prism
V=lxwxh

◦ V = 6cm x 3cm x 4cm

Volume of a Rectangular Prism
Give the formula for the given data.
1. Length = 7m V=lxwxh
Width = 4m
V = 7m x 4m x 8m
Height = 8m
2. Length = 15 in V = l x w x h
Width = 8 in V = 15 in x 8 in x 17 in
Height = 17 in
Finding the Volume of a Cube
and a Rectangular Prism
Find the Volume.
1. s = 7 cm 2. s = 15 in
◦V = s x s x s V=sxsxs
◦ = 7 cm x 7 cm x 7 cm = 15 in x 15 in x 15 in
◦ = 343 cm3 = 3375 in3
Finding the Volume of a Cube
and a Rectangular Prism
Find the Volume.
3. l = 3 m 4. l = 15 cm
w=4m w = 17 cm
h=5m h = 20 cm
◦V=lxwxh V=lxwxh
◦ = 3m x 4m x 5m = 15cm x 17 cm x 20 cm
◦ = 60 m3 = 5100 cm3
Problem Solving
Solve the following problems by answering the Know (K),
Want (W) and Learn (L).

1. Anne baked a banana cake 40 cm long, 32 cm wide and 13 cm high.

What is the volume of the cake?
◦ K – Length = 40 cm, Width = 32 cm, Height = 13 cm
◦ W – The volume of the cake
◦ L – To find the volume of a cake, multiply the length by the width and by the
height.
◦V=lxwxh
◦ V = 40cm x 32 cm x 13 cm
◦ V = 16640 cm3
Problem Solving
Solve the following problems by answering the Know (K),
Want (W) and Learn (L).

2. A rubik’s cube has equal sides of 8 centimeters. What is the

volume?
◦ K – sides = 8 cm
◦ W – The volume of a rubik’s cube
◦ L – To find the volume of a rubik’s cube, multiple the sides 3 times by itself.
V=sxsxs
= 8 cm x 8 cm x 8 cm
= 512 cm3
