TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT’S ACTIVITY

A. Preliminary Activities

Good morning class! Good morning Ma’am.

Are you all doing great? Yes ma’am. How about you?

Good to hear. I’m doing great also. Are you now ready, Yes ma’am.
so that we can start?

Let’s have a prayer first, a silent prayer. (Prayer)

Thank you. You may now take your seats.

Class, may I know who are absent for today? None ma’am.

Very good! It is nice to know that you really love my

subject, Mathematics. So, let’s give everybody a round (students clap their hands)
of applause.

Now, we will have another interesting topic for today.

But, before that, let’s play a game. Raise your hand if (students raise their hands)
you want games.

B. Motivation

Today, we will have guessing game.

I will give you numbers, and guess the next number. For
example: 2, 4, 6, . . . then? (students will answer)
Okay good.

So, let’s start. Just please raise your right hand if you Yes ma’am.
want to answer, don’t answer in chorus, understand?

Now, 5, 10 15, 20, 25, . . . what will be the next? (one of the students will volunteer to answer)

Good. Let’s have another one, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, ...? (one of the students will volunteer to answer)

Good. Last one, 20, 15, 10, 5, 0, . . . . . . ? (one of the students will volunteer to answer)

C. Developmental Activities

Last meeting we discussed about Linear Equations in Yes, ma’am.

two variables, and the methods for getting the value of
two variables, am I right?

Who among you can enumerate those methods? (one of the students will answer)

Okay, good. Thank you for that. So as we discussed last

meeting, Elimination and Substitution are the two
methods to find the value of two variables in two None so far, ma’am.
equation, you may use these methods depends on the
equation that you have. Any questions, clarifications
with regards to our previous discussion?

1. Lesson Proper

So class, our topic for today is all about Arithmetic

Sequence. We had a guessing game just a while ago, Yes, ma’am.
right?

Therefore, as we observed it is an arithmetic sequence.

When we say Arithmetic, it is one of the branches of
Mathematics that consists of the study of numbers,
especially the properties of the traditional operations. Addition ma’am.
This includes subtraction, division, multiplication, and?

Good. In sequence, it is a number of events or things

that come one after another in particular order.
Therefore, if we combine those two words, Arithmetic
Sequence is a numbers that has a constant difference
between every two consecutive terms and it is made by
adding the same value each time, is that clear class? Yes, ma’am.

In our guessing game, how did you find out that 2, 4, 6,

then 8 is the next number to 6?
Very good. We have a general formula for Arithmetic (one student will volunteer to answer)
Sequence:
an =a1 + ( n−1 ) d ; where

an - the nth term

a1 – the first term
n - the variable
d – the common difference

Let us have an example using this formula.

Find the 27th term of the arithmetic sequence of 5, 8, 11,
14, . . . . .
First, we must identify the given that corresponds to the The first term is 5, ma’am.
formula. What is our a1 ?

And our n is 27, because that’s the term that we have to Yes, ma’am.
find. Is that clear class?

So for our d, since we have the 1st and 2nd term, we can
easily get the d, we just subtract the 2nd term to the 1st 8 – 5 is equal to 3, ma’am.
term. So what is our d now class?

Very good, so after we write all the given, then

substitute it to our general formula:
an =a1 + ( n−1 ) d
a27=5+ ( 27−1 ) 3
a27=5+ ( 26 ) 3
a27 =5+78
a27=83
Yes ma’am.
So, that’s how we find the nth term, did you get it class?

Let’s have another problem. No ma’am.

Find the 40th term for the arithmetic sequence in which
a8 =60 and a12=48 . Can you identify class what
is the d?
The Elimination method and Substitution method
As you can see, we have no a1 , it’s difficult for us to ma’am.
determine the d, by that we need the 2 methods to find
the first term and the common difference, so again, what
are those two methods class?

a8 =a1 + ( 8−1 ) d
60 = a1 + 7d (equation 1)

a12=a1+ ( 12−1 ) d
48 = a1 +11 d (equation 2) Ma’am, I think it’s easy for us to eliminate first
the a1 .
Now, which of the two I’m going to eliminate first?

So, we must subtract (E2) to (E1):

60 = a1 + 7d
- (48 = a1 +11 d )
12 = 0 – 4d
-3 = d

I prefer E1 ma’am.
Then let us substitute the d from E1 or E2 to find the
first term. So what equation I’m going to use?

So, from E1 we have,

60 = a1 + 7d, then substitute d = -3
60 = a1 + 7(-3)
60 = a1 – 21
81 = a1

Therefore, we have 81 = a1 and -3 = d. By using

this, we can now solve for the 40th term.

Now, we can substitute this to the general equation, -36 ma’am

an =a1 + ( n−1 ) d
a 40 =81+ ( 40−1 ) d
a 40 =81+39 (−3 )
a 40 =81−117
a 40 =?

Very good. Therefore, the 40th term for the arithmetic

sequence is -36.

2. Generalization None so far ma’am.

Thank you class. I think you have understood our

lesson. Any questions? Yes, ma’am.

Did you learn something today? We have learned how to use and apply the
formula in finding the next term or the nth term
Well, what is that? of the Arithmetic sequence.

Very good! an =a1 + ( n−1 ) d , ma’am.

Now, what is the general formula of an Arithmetic

sequence?
3. Application

This time we are going to have a quiz show. Let’s count

1-4 class. (each group will give a group names)
In every group, you must think of a unique name.

Okay. So I will give you 5 questions only and you will Yes, ma’am.
only have a 15seconds to answer the question. With or
without answer you must raise your boards.
Understand?

E. ASSIGNMENT

Since there is no question. Next meeting your Yes, ma’am.

assignment is to create your own problem in Arithmetic
Sequence and solve it. Explain it to the class.
