Word Problems Involving

Volume of Solids
1. Find the volume of the solid shown in the figure.
Solution:
Given: d = 12 m
h = 10 m
Formula: V = πr2h
= 3.14 x 6 x 6 x 10
V = 1 130.4 m 3

Note: diameter is given

2. Circumference of a sphere is 10 yds. Find the
volume of the sphere to the nearest whole number.
Solution:
Given: C = 10 yds
Formula: 4/3πr3
Since circumference is given, we will derive the
formula in finding the radius because we need the
radius to find the volume of a sphere.
C = 2πr
To derive the formula:
r = C/2π
= 10/ 2 x 3.14
r = 1.59
So, the radius is 1.59
Given: r = 1.59 yds
Formula: V = 4/3πr3
= 4/3 x 3.14 x 1.59 x 1.59 x 1.59
= 4/3 x 12.62
= 4 x 12.62
3
= 50.48
3
V = 16.82 yds3.

Nearest whole number is 17 yds.3

3. Sally has a chocolate box whose length is 12
cm, height 8 cm, and width 6 cm. Find the volume
of a box.
Solution:
Given: l = 12 cm
w = 8 cm
h = 6 cm
Formula: V = l x w x h
= 12 x 8 x 6
V = 576 cm3
4. Find the volume of a cube as shown below.

Given: l = 10 cm w = 10 cm h = 10 cm

v = a if the base edge is given

3

If dimensions are given use V = l x w x h

V=lxwxh
= 10 x 10 10
V = 1 000 cm3
5. Carol made rectangular pyramid using sand. The
base area and height of the pyramid are 6 ft and 4
ft respectively. Find the volume of the rectangular
pyramid Carol made.
Given: b = 6 ft
h = 4 ft.
Formula: V = 1/3bh
= 1/3 x 6 x 4
= 1/3 x 24
= 24
3
V = 8 ft3
Find the volume of the solid shown.
6.

Given: d= 4ft. Note: diameter is given

h = 6 ft.
Formula: V = πr2h

= 3.14 x 2 x 2 x 6
V= 75.36 ft3
7. What is the volume of a cone with a
diameter of 15 cm and a height of 28 cm?
Given: d = 15 cm
h = 28 cm
Note: the given base is diameter, divide it by 2 to get the radius, so we have 7.5 cm radius.

Formula: V = 1/3πr2h or πr2h

3
= 3.14 x 7.5 x 7.5 x 28

= 4 945.5
3

V = 1 648.5 cm3
