Target

Hey kids, it’s nice to be back. How are you today? Do you miss me? I hope that
you are doing great despite this pandemic we are dealing with. Anyway, you are lucky
today because you are again invited to join me in my journey towards another world
of exciting Mathematics problems.

This module was designed and written for you to understand the process on
how to translate real-life verbal expressions and equations into letters or symbols and
vice versa. (M6AL-IIIe-16).
After going through this module, you are expected to:

• Define equation.
• Translate real-life expressions and equations into letters or symbols and
vice versa.

Ok let us start with the first activity. This activity will

enable you to assess your prior knowledge regarding
our lesson.

Directions: Match the algebraic equations/expressions in Column A with their

word translation in Column B. Write the letter that corresponds to your answer.
Write your answer on your activity notebook.
A B
_____ 1. 5 + n a. a certain number subtracted by six
_____ 2. a – 6 b. the sum of four and a number is fifteen
_____ 3. 2b + 3 c. nine times a number subtracted by seven is eleven
_____ 4. 4c – 8 d. twice a number added to three
_____ 5. 3s – 3 e. four times a number subtracted by eight
_____ 6. 4 + b = 15 f. three times a number minus three
_____ 7. 2a – 6 = 12 g. four times the sum of a number and four is
thirty-six
10
_____ 8. +3=8 h. the sum of five and a certain number
h
_____ 9. 9d – 7 = 11 i. four times a number subtracted by six
_____ 10. 4(c + 4) = 36 j. the quotient of ten and a number added to three is
equal to eight
k. twice a number minus six is equal to twelve

One of the most important skills in math that we

have to acquire, especially when it comes to solving
word problems, is the ability to translate verbal
phrases or sentences to equations. When we say
equation, this is a mathematical sentence with an
equal sign which shows that two expressions on
either side are equal. To translate verbal phrases
or sentences to algebraic equations, mastery on
translating verbal phrases to algebraic expressions
is required.

Let us consider the following examples.

Example 1: Translate into an algebraic equation: The sum of a number and ten
is twenty.
Solution:
Let b be the number. Then, we have:
the sum of a number and ten is twenty

b + 10 = 20
or
a number plus ten is twenty

b + 10 = 20
Therefore, Algebraic Equation: b + 10 = 20

Example 2: Translate into an algebraic equation: Thrice a number decreased

by eight is equal to fourteen.
Solution:
Let a be the number. Then, we have:
thrice a number decreased by eight is equal to fourteen

3a - 8 = 14
Therefore, the algebraic equation is 3a – 8 = 14

Example 3: Translate into an algebraic equation: If seven is added to the

difference of a number and sixteen, the sum is fifty.
Solution:
Let c be the number. Then, we have:
the difference of a number and sixteen plus seven is fifty

c – 16 + 7 = 50
The algebraic equation is: c – 16 + 7 = 50 or (c – 16) + 7 = 50
Example 4: Translate into word phrases: 3 + a = 11
Solution:
3 + a = 11
Three plus a number is eleven
Therefore, the word phrase is: Three plus a number is eleven.
or
3 + a = 11
Three sum a number is eleven
Word phrase: The sum of three and a number is eleven.

Example 5: Translate into word phrases: 2b – 4 = 8

Solution:
2b - 4 = 8
twice a number minus four is equal to eight
Word translation is: Twice a number minus four is equal to eight.
Example 6: Translate into word phrases: 2(a + 6) = 22
Solution:
2 (a + 6) = 22
Twice sum of a number and six is twenty-two
Work phrase is: Twice the sum of a number and six is twenty- two.

Remember this:
The following translation will help you also in translating algebraic equations
into word phrases and vice versa.
