Grade 5-Amethyst
SCIENCE ONLINE CLASS
FOURTH QUARTER
Heavenly Father, creator of all things
We thank you Oh Lord for such a wonderful day
We ask for your Heavenly knowledge Oh Lord
as we study our lesson today
Guide us Dear Father and protect us from all matters of
harm and danger.
Thank you so much Dear God for hearing and answering
our prayers.
Please forgive us from our sins.
All these we ask and pray
In Jesus name
Amen.
Checking of
Attendance
I want you to stay focused as we go
on with our lesson.

Do not do unnecessary things while

our class is still going.

Listen carefully.

Have you seen a marble

A stone
carving?
or simply a rugged
stone?
Can you describe
them?

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation
in Burgos, Ilocos Norte
Rocks are hard, compact, and
solid.

Weathering
It is the process of
breaking down of
rocks into small
fragments.
Weathering

Types of Weathering

Mechanic Chemical

Mechanical
Weathering
Physical Weathering
It is the breakdown of rock where no chemical
change takes place, and no new substances are
produced.
The rocks may change their size, but they are still
the same kind of rock.
a.
Temperature
alternating hot and
cold temperatures
weaken the rock as
it expands and
contracts
The strong waves
b. Water that hit the rocks.
b. Water

Frost Action /
Frost Wedging
c. Wind
As the wind blows, it carries sand or small rock
particles that scratch the rock’s surface.
c. Wind
d. Plants
Plant roots uplift and fracture rock.
d. Plants
Lichens and mosses grow on
rocks.

They wedge their tiny roots

into spores and crevices.

When the roots grow, the

rock splits.
e. Animals
As burrowing animals such as rabbits, moles, and badgers dig
deeper, they cause rocks to break into pieces.

Chemical
Weathering
The process by which chemicals
breakdown rock through a change in
the mineral’s composition, happens
fastest in a hot, moist climate.
a. Oxidation
It occurs when oxygen
from the air combines
with iron-rich minerals of
the rock,
oxidation = RUST.
b.
Carbonation
It occurs when water combines with
carbon dioxide in the air to form
carbonic acid. This acid attacks and
dissolves mineral called calcite.
Rocks made up of calcite such as
limestone, sandstone, and marble
can be broken down this way.
In what ways can
weathering affect
us?
Quarrying operations in a certain
province has been stopped by the
Department of Environment and
Natural Resources or DENR.
Why do you think so?
Weathering is one of the Earth’s
natural ways of shaping the land;
however, certain human activities can
hasten these process. How can you
help lessen the activities’ harmful
effects on people and the
environment?

Weathering or CW if it shows Chemical Weathering. Write
your answer in your Science notebook.
:
1. Cracks on the rocks are caused by
heating and cooling.

2. Water freezes inside small holes in rock

causing the rock to split up.
