CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

The world is suffering due to a pandemic that causes loss of lives, poor economy, and other

effects of the COVID-19. It started in China around December 2019; WHO announced it as a global

crisis or a pandemic on March 11, 2020. The COVID-19 still affects the economy and small

households. Globally, large and small countries were heavily influenced by the pandemic because not

everyone is allowed to leave home when the virus is at its peak. The businesses and other services

were shut down and forces to be closed by the WHO to ensure employees and everyone's safety.

Even the cases of recovery rise, and the precautionary for the COVID-19 is still mandatory. There are

already out vaccines for public use, but the Philippines has no access yet to mass importation of any

of them, and the only thing that we can do is prevent the spread of the diseases. Many parts of our

society have been affected, particularly the travel and tourism business, the service and manufacturer

sectors that the cycle of supply chains disrupted, and many people's livelihood and employment. The

education sectors are also affected by the pandemic. We face struggles and difficulties in learning

because of the new system of education that the government has implemented. The pandemic affects

not just the social, physical, and health of human beings but also emotional stress and depression.

The study's main objective is to develop a device that will help the people in public avoid the

spread of diseases such as COVID 19. A device that will lessen the spread of the virus, especially in

school facilities. Maintaining the proper hygiene of every student or personnel will possibly stop the

spread of the virus. Putting up this device in the entrance of the schools or any vicinities will

2

encourage the people to practice hand washing often. In that simple way, we can contribute to the

prevention of the spread of the diseases.

Foot pedal hand washing station is a low-cost hand washing machine made up of readily

available materials that can be easily acquired. It is a machine that generates power through human

pedalling, inexpensive parts, and has very low repairing and maintenance cost. The researchers intend to

directly address the people's problems through foot pedal hand washing to promote and encourage

proper hygiene and cleanliness.

Objectives of the Study

The general objective of this study is to develop a low-cost, durable, and portable pedal

handwashing stations.

  Specifically, it will aim to:

1. Design a low-cost portable pedal hand washing station;

2. Assess the materials used in the development of the project;

3. Evaluate project in terms of:

a. Functionality

b. Reliability

c. Usability

d. Portability

e. Workability

3

f. Safety

Significance of the study

This study will help people inside the school in maintaining physical hygiene and preventing the

virus from spreading.

Students and other school staff. Students, teachers, and other school staff can easily maintain proper

hygiene to prevent the spread of coronavirus and other communicable diseases.

Parents. Parents can ensure the health and safety of their children going to school.

Future researchers. This study can serve as a basis for further research on preventing the spread of

coronavirus in schools.

Scope and Delimitation

The study aims to develop a portable hand washing station at low cost. The study's expert

evaluators consist of BSU Drafting professors and some administrators during the first and second-

semester academic year 2021 - 2022.

The project aims to be distributed in the schools and some public places around Bustos and

Baliwag. The study will benefit everyone since it can help us prevent the spread of diseases such as the

coronavirus by maintaining the cleanliness of our hands. It can be used in some areas in the entrances of

the establishments that have no water lines or lavatories. Its portability makes the project more useful

4
Portable and Inexpensive Pedal Hand Washing Station

since it can be placed in any area where needed. The water residue can also be used in watering the

plants and or for cleaning of the floor.

The project is limited to small amount of water supply only that can be refilled at least once a

day or by demand.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

5
Portable and Inexpensive Pedal Hand Washing Station

Related Literature and Studies

This chapter includes ideas, finished studies, generalizations or conclusions, and experts'

methodologies to be familiarized with the study's information. All these related literature will support

the importance of our device.

According to the World Health Organization, hand hygiene is a general term that refers to any

activity of hand washing, for the purpose of removing dust, dirt, and/or microorganisms, the act of

cleaning one's hands with or without the use of water or other liquid, or with the use of soap. When face-

to-face classes begin, it is very important for all learners to have proper hand hygiene. The World Health

Organization estimates that every day around the world, a thousand people die from infections acquired

through physical contact, so it is essential and necessary to ensure proper hygiene. The World Health

Organization has shown some data to suggest that the COVID-19 virus is transmitted through

respiratory droplets or touch. Contact transmission occurs when contaminated hands touch the mucosa

of the mouth, nose, or eyes; contaminated hands can also transfer the virus from one surface to another,

facilitating indirect contact transmission.

Consequently, to avoid the spread of the COVID19 virus, hand hygiene is extremely necessary. The

transmission of other viruses and bacteria causing common colds, flu and pneumonia is also interrupted,

thereby reducing the overall burden of illness. And WHO recommends that one or more hand hygiene

stations (either for hand washing with soap and water or for hand rubbing with an alcohol-based hand

rub) should be installed in front of every public entrance, particularly when the face-to-face class starts

in schools.

On April 1 2020, WHO provided interim guidance recommending to all Member States that

hand hygiene facilities should be made compulsory in front of public and private commercial buildings

6
Portable and Inexpensive Pedal Hand Washing Station

as well as at all transport hubs. In particular, individuals in heavily populated areas would benefit from

enhanced facilities for hand hygiene at home and in public places.

UNICEF supports the idea of WHO of having a hand washing in every public place, and they

suggest that Low-cost, rapidly scaled up solutions for hand hygiene made from local materials such as

the tippy tap can foster community engagement and ownership, but evidence suggests that these hand

washing facilities might break easily and it's unclear whether they lead to sustainable behaviour change.

Higher-end, more durable, attractive, and disability accessible commercial products are more expensive

and not as easy to manufacture and repair locally but might be more likely to encourage sustained

behaviour change. They said that handwashing stations should be appropriate for the intended user(s) or

the use case (households, markets, health care facilities, schools, places of worship, public transportation

hubs, refugee camps, etc.). Three sets of criteria should be taken into consideration. First, the station

should enable recommended hand washing. Second, the design should be adapted to the local context,

allowing local manufacturing, management and repair and adequate use of water and soap. Third, the

design should provide a pleasant, convenient user experience for all users.

Project Design

Dr. Jim Watt designed a handwashing device called "Mukombe or the tippy tap. It is a simple

water dispenser that enables people to wash their hands without wasting water. The device's water

system is foot-operated; however, the soap is not, but it is still hygienic.

In the 1950s, they invented the Automatic Hand Washing Machine, but they were not produced

for commercial until the 1980s when they appeared in airports. However, it is very expensive to install

this kind of device because it consists of sensors or electronic technology. Most luxurious hotels, malls,

and restaurants have this device.

7
Portable and Inexpensive Pedal Hand Washing Station

Later developments, Johnson, Davies, and Lingard, develop a different variety of handwashing

devices. It includes the Hand Washing Device with drying equipment and a Hand Washing Device with

an electro-mechanical device that provides time elements initiated with water flow. However, these

devices are made of expensive materials, and they are commonly found in luxurious places.

All the previous handwashing devices offered a guide to our design. Our design contributes to

preventing the spread of viruses in a simple manner and affordable materials. It is a low-cost, durable,

and portable pedal hand washing station that can be used in public places, especially in school—the

device which will be designed by the proponents provides a touch-less hand washing experience. The

water and soap are both foot-operated, so it is very hygienic.

Materials

PVC pipe and connectors

According to Mulder and Knot (2001), PVC was officially discovered and implemented in public

utility system in 1912. The substance used in making PVC was a compounded element which is

polyvinyl and chlorine. This perfect mixture gave the scientist milky white substance, which solidified

after it cooled. After several research, the polyvinyl chloride material was more stable and durable than

other materials; it also lights in weight rather than metal and steel. PVC will provide more lighter, which

improves the portability and workability of the device.

Importance of Hand Washing

8
Portable and Inexpensive Pedal Hand Washing Station

Harapan, Itoh & Mudatsir (2019) state that many people believed that COVID-19 is caused by

animals that were only transmitted to humans, but, as a genomic study has been made, they have

gathered proof that it also came from human that has been transferred as time passes by. There is no

exact location where it possibly happened. However, the market is one of the places that they think

caused the virus's rapid spread because of non-stop interaction between people.

According to Moore, Robins & Arbogast (2020), handwashing plays an important role in preventing

COVID-19, especially for the health care workers exposed to different germs caused by their

surroundings. By doing this action it is proven that it reduces the number of infected.

A group infected family and front liners have been recorded because of close contact. Less than

10% of patients had visited the market before they got infected, while 70% were not. People who have

face-to-face interaction with someone carrying the virus have a high chance of getting infected when

they cough or sneeze near them (Harapan, Itoh & Mudatsir, 2019).

Guota et al. (2020) said that because of the rapid spread of COVID 19 the productivity of a

person lessens as they are working virtually, and it affects their performance in their jobs.

Lie et al. (2020), states that being infected without knowing about it is one of the reasons for rapid

outbreak of Corona Virus. In China, it is estimated that 86% of the travelers were not aware that they are

already infected and continue traveling inside and outside of the country, and this is why the

transmission rate for undocumented infected persons was high.
