Reflection Log 6: Rubaiyat

The discussion this week is quite challenging since some terms or phrases
must be thoroughly examined to comprehend their meaning. This week's focus
was Omar Khayyam's work entitled Rubaiyat. First, we analyzed the meaning of
the title “Rubaiyat” and further what it is all about.

The poem's premise is centered on the popular catchphrase YOLO, which

stands for "You Only Live Once." The poem emphasizes biblical beliefs about how
we should approach life because we shall all end up in ash sooner or later. In that
sense, I am a firm believer that in this world, there is no such thing as a constant.
This is why it is critical to step out of your closet and learn to prioritize yourself,
particularly the things you desire to do, whether they are profound or merely
random.

Honestly, I am terrified of being ash someday. It might be because I am

aware that there are still a lot of agendas on my plate that I need to accomplish.
Furthermore, I am still cocooned by my parents and the fear that if I take the risk
of flying, it would harm the things I work on for a long time. However, this is the
reality in which death is constantly behind us. Soon, I'll learn to spread my wings
and finally understand what they mean by "YOLO."

As far as what the poem wishes to convey to its audience, we should learn
to appreciate the present and make the most of the time we have in this world.
It is much desirable to be rational in our actions, but I believe there are moments
when we should let go of ourselves and see the consequences of our actions as
part of reality and life.
