Solving Management Problems

Teams plays an essential part in a company’s success, especially when it comes to

completing a particular project or goal within a specific time period. Based on the company’s

goals, there are numerous ways an organization can build an effective team to ensures its

success. A successful team is linked to the team effectiveness, good leadership and effective

communication. According to Bateman et al. (2019), team effectiveness can be defined by three

major criteria: the productive output of the team, satisfaction of personal needs of the team

members, and commitment of the team members to ensure success. Teams should be kept as

small as possible to be effective and maintain team members self-accountability to each other but

large enough to fill important roles within to achieve success.

The effectiveness of the team is dependent on trust between the team members.

According to Rao (2016), organizations can build teams that are more effective by establishing

trust and respect between leadership and employees. According to Bateman et al. (2019, p. 315),

ground rules should be set for employees to follow to ensure goals are reached and rewarded.

Setting ground rules within your team can improve the quality of work. Some examples include

open communication and being respectful of others. By making time to recognize and reward

individual success helps build morale while also motivating others to push harder.

Therefore, to build a lasting relationship in the workplace you must first begin with

establishing trust (Rao, 2016). Trust in an important trait that every team leader should have to

ensure the success of his or her team. However, the team leader should note that trust is not

automatically given, it’s developed over time. The team leader build trust with the team members

by being honest at all times, keeping the team updated about their progress, and not overusing

authority. Trust is a mutual thing and team leaders can show they trust them by listening to the

ideas, suggestions, and opinions of the teammates. Furthermore, you must assure the team

members that you will deliver on your promises, support the team’s goals, and help during

challenging times. This also conveys respect.

According to Bateman et al. (2019, p. 158), “When delegating work, it helps to

distinguish among the concepts of authority, responsibility, and accountability.” Therefore, some

of the traits that are exhibited by effective team leaders are, holding the team members

accountable, building trust, and communication. By holding the team members accountable for

their roles will ensure their commitment to the tasks at hand are completed. Trust is another way

to keep the team effective. Having team building opportunities will set the stage for success.

Organizations could ensure that team leads are exhibiting the traits of an effective team

leader by conducting regular visits without informing them beforehand. As a result, the company

leaders can see how the teams are performing. Also, the organizations can consider having

weekly meetings with the teams and review how far they have progressed in achieving the set

goals or completing a particular project assigned to the team. According to Bateman et al.

(2019), teams can better understand and measure their progress by having team-based measuring

systems in place.

Communication is an essential element in building an effective team and ensuring its

success. There are several different modes of communication available to a team. According to

Bateman et al. (2019, p. 311), the two that work most effectively for team communication are

face-to-face communication and emailing. According to Bateman, Snell, and Konopaske (2018),

face-to-face is usually a necessity but as things move further into the digital frontier, video chats

are becoming more commonplace. Email is another tool that, despite many new tools trying to

replace it, is not going away anytime soon. This tool is dependable and allows users to bring

people into a conversation with ease. According to Bateman et al. (2019), emailing has its

drawbacks, but it is by far the most widely used platform for digital communication. It is an

official formal form of communication and allows you to get info to your team without pulling

them from projects.

In conclusion, building an effective team starts with trust and communication. Without

these two starting points, a team will not be as effective and collaborate to complete the tasks at

hand. The team leader needs to exhibit traits such as leading by example so the team can follow

along, making sure the team is accountable for their roles in the team, so the project or work gets

completed effectively. Overall, when a team works together cohesively, the organization can

benefit from their productivity greatly.
