LESSON PLANNING 2

Steps in a Reading class: B1/B2 30 min 3/4 S

1. Lead-in [3-4 min]: To spark interest, to present topic in context, to activate prior
knowledge.
Keep it short and focused.
a. Video, mind map, questions or other material that would make Ss s
2. Pre-teach [5-6 min]: To familiarize Ss with lexis needed to do main tasks and check Ss
understanding of presented lexis (CCQs prepared in advanced) – 5-6 words to pre-
teach
a. Matching task
b. Filling gaps CCQs
Do both activities mentioned before
3. Task 1 [5 min]: To give the Ss a general idea about the text, to practice reading
skimming or scanning.
a. We focus on things that you may see in the text without reading. Things that
overrate in front of others: names, dates, titles, numbers, bolded,
highlighted…
b. Simple questions about these visible things: “How many countries can you find
in the article?” (Just questions that are simple and visible when looking at the
text)  Normally 3 questions
c. Structure’s visual
Let them check in pairs/group of 3 as they’ll practice speaking and are not ashamed of
the mistakes.
Time limit
4. Task 2 [6-7 min]: To give the Ss further reading practice, to practice reading for
detail/intensive reading
a. More concrete questions to figure out they had a nice comprehension of the
text, in detail: open ended questions.  Normally 4-5 questions
Let them check in pairs/group of 3 as they’ll practice speaking and are not ashamed of
the mistakes.
Time limit
5. Follow-up [8-9 min]: To give Ss an opportunity to produce practiced language, to give
Ss speaking for fluency practice.
a. Questions, games, projects, presentations, debates…

6. Error correction/Review:

When choosing the reading start planning Task 1/2 and then build the rest of the plan from
there on.
