What is Anti termite treatment?

The treatment done to prevent the growth of termites in the house is called anti-termite treatment.

Termites are more common in tropical and subtropical countries.  It eats wood, leather, plastic,
paper, etc.
There are two types of termites.
1. Dry wood termite
2.  Sub-terranean termite
1. Dry wood termite
Dry wood termite lives in wood and eats wood hollow.  It has nothing to do
with clay.
2. Subterranean termite
Subterranean termite live in the ground and eat wood, leather, paper, etc.
Methods of Anti Termite treatments
Anti termite treatment can be divided into two parts.
1. Pre-construction Anti Termite treatment
2. Post-construction Anti Termite treatment
1. Pre-construction Anti Termite treatment:
This treatment is done in two stages.
 Site Preparation
 Soil treatment
1. Site Preparation:
Wood pieces, tree roots etc. are removed from the place where construction is
to be done.  If a termite infection is found, it should be treated with chemical
drugs.  A hole is drilled in the raft and a disinfectant solution is poured into
the hole.
Chemicals Used for Anti Termite Treatment

Chemicals Concentration by Weight

1. DDT 5%

2. BHC 0.5%

3. ALDRIN 0.25%

4. HEPTACHLOR 0.25%

5. CHLORDANE 0.5%

2. Soil treatment:
In these phases the soil below and around the building is treated with a solution of disinfectant
chemicals, the chemicals used for anti termite treatment are as follows:

Chemicals Concentration

ALDRIN 0.5%

HEPTACHLOR 0.5%

CHLORDANE 1%

DIELDRIN 0.5%

CHEMICALS USED FOR ANTI TERMITE TREATMENT

Soil treatment is given in the following stages.

1. Excavation for Foundation trenches, column pits, basement:
The bottom surface and vertical surfaces of excavation up to a height of 300
mm, should be treated using 5 liters of solution for 1 m2 area.
The soil filling in the foundation work, columns, basements etc. should be
treated using 7.5 liters of solution for 1 m2 of vertical surface area.
2. Soil used in plinth filing:
The topmost layer of soil used for filing in plinth needs to be treated with
suitable chemical solution.
It has a 50 to 75 mm deep, 150 mm c/c hole in the soil filling between the four
walls.  The solution is poured into it at the rate of 5 liters per square meter
area.
3. Near the junction of walls and floor:
In this way, a 30 mm wide and 30 mm deeper channel is made near the wall
and floor junction in the soil, above the plinth.  This channel has a hole
at 150mm c/c distance. The solution is then poured into this hole at the rate
of 7.5 liters for 1m2 of vertical surface area.
4. Treatment at the outer wall edges:
In this treatment, 300 mm deep pits are made at a distance of 150 mm c/c  on
the outside adjacent to the outer wall.  The solution is then poured at the rate
of 2.25 liters for a length of 1 m.  The pit is then filled with clay.
5. Soil around the pipes:
Where the pipe enters or exits the building, the soil should be treated with
termite resistant solution up to a distance of 150 mm on the outside and up
to 300 mm on the inside.
6. Soil around the expansion joint:
The soil below the flooring should be treated with 2 liters of solution for 1 m
length of joint length.
2. Post-construction Anti Termite treatment:
The various stages of post-construction termite resistant treatment are as
follows:
1. Observation of the building
2. Soil treatment around the foundation
3. Soil treatment under the floor
4. Treatment of cavities in masonry
5. Treatment of woodwork.
1. Observation of the building:
The purpose of the observation is to know how much termite was brought into
the house and where it originated as well as which parts of the building were
damaged.
2. Soil treatment around the foundation:
 In this stage the soil under the foundation and around the building is
treated.
 A trench about 50 cm deep is dug on the outside of the outer wall of the
building.
 Holes are drilled in this trench at a distance of 150 mm c/c with iron
rods.
 This hole should be up to the top of the footing or at least 50 cm deep.
 The soil is then treated with 1.5 liters of solution per 1 m2 of surface
area in contact with the soil.
3. Floor bottom soil treatment:
Where there are cracks in the floor, A 12 mm diameter hole is made at a
distance of 300 mm c/c.  The disinfectant solution is poured into this hole until
the bottom soil is saturated.
4. Treatment of cavities in masonry:
This treatment involves drilling holes of 12 mm diameter at an angle
of 45degree on the surface of both sides at the plinth level in the masonry wall
at a distance of 300 mm c/c.  An anti-termite disinfectant solution is poured
into these pores.
5. Woodworking Treatment:
In this treatment, the wood is provided with a 6 mm diameter hole 130 mm
c/c at an angle of 45degree towards the bottom.  An oil based chemical
solution is pumped in this hole.
