11.1 Exponential Relation Between N and b
If N > 0, b > 0 and b  1, then N = bx is the exponential relation
between N and b.
N is called the Number , b the base and x the exponent.

Examples
(1) 27 = 33 (2) 8 = 23 (3) 125 = 53
(4) 81 = 34 (5) 100 = 102 (6) 1 = b0

Logarithm
Logarithm means exponent.

Example
81 = 34
Logarithm of 81 is 4.
25 = 52
Logarithm of 25 is 2.

Note: Different exponents are found to have different bases.

Examples
(1) 81 = 34
Logarithm of 81 to the base 3 is 4.
Symbolically log3 81 = 4.

(2) 729 = 36
Logarithm of 729 to the base 3 is 6.
Symbolically, Log3 729 = 6

Definition
In an exponential relation N = bx, where N>0 , b>0, b  1 , logarithm
of N to the base b is x.
Symbolically, LogbN = x  N = bx

Exponent Form Logarithmic Form

N = bx LogbN = x
