SOCIETY

• An organized group whose members interact
frequently and have a common territory and culture.
SOCIETY
• Philosophers consider society as a product of
deliberate actions by individuals who come together in
pursuit of a common goal
• This is considered unique among all other groups
because of the nature of the human persons that
compose it, as well as the relationships among its
members.
Social Contract Theory
• Social contract theory says that people live together
in society in accordance with an agreement that
establishes moral and political rules of behavior.
• An agreement where individuals sacrifice an amount
of their freedom and submit to a higher authority.
Thomas Hobbes
• Hobbes viewed government
primarily as a device for ensuring
collective security.
• Used the idea of natural law to
argue that absolute monarchy was
the best form of government
John Locke
• His political thought was grounded
in the notion of a social contract
between citizens and in the
importance of toleration, especially
in matters of religion.
• He argued that leaders could stay
in power as long as they had the
consent of the governed
Jean-Jacques Rousseau
• Believed that humans are naturally
good but the environment is
corrupting.
• His ideas on social contract led him to
advocate the concept of the “general
