vPerform analysis and synthesis based on the
design specs in the handout
– Address every item in the design spec; missing
items will result in deduction of scores
– Check the analytical results and justify your
choice of sizes of ball screws and motors, as well
as other machine elements in this design
 Design Spec
vWorkspace is 6”x6” à the size of the XY screws
has to provide the platform to move anywhere
within this 6”x6” space
vAbout the platform:
– Weight (static) is 60 lb
– A drilling tool is mounted on the platform in the y-
direction (with 1.0” offset—to calculate moment, in
addition to force)
– Motion control: the reflected mass/inertia must be
considered when moving the platform (see handout)

vSpeed ≤ 25 mm/sec
– This relates to your motor speed; hence, the rated
torque (speed-torque curve)
vAbout the force/torque
– Consider static and dynamic load (inertia)à FBD
– The XY table is leveled (horizontally)
vComputer-controlled; resolution required
– Pick pitch of the ball screw that meets the
resolution requirement

elements/parts in your report
– The technical information should include screws,
and motors. You must attach a hardcopy of data
sheet of your design in the Appendix.
vProvide a price estimate of your system
– You can include quotes from companies for each
items, such as the ball screws and motors, or
published prices on the web page (attach hardcopy)
– Provide a cost estimate of the entire system
– Attach a bill of materials with your price estimate
 Design Drawings
vInclude your design drawing, parts diagram,
and assembly drawing in your report
– These drawings should be included in the
Appendix with proper reference in the main body
of the report
– Dimensions, based on your design, should be
included in the drawings
