1. What is your own definition of a curriculum?

Answer:

In my own perspective, the curriculum in the

modern sense is the overall experience of the
learners whether inside the classroom or outside the
four corners of the learning environment. It has to
include the learners as the center, the teacher, the
learning environment, and even the immediate
community that supports the learning processes of
the school.

Learners as the center of the curriculum ensure

all components of education focuses on how to
address the needs of the learners. It includes the
physical, human, and most especially learning
resources. Everything works to achieve quality and
relevant education.

The teacher as part of the curriculum has a

very crucial role in delivering the mandate of an
educational institution. As a facilitator of
learning, the teacher translates the written
curriculum into meaningful and engaging activities
for the learners. The teacher has to cultivate a
positive learning environment to allow the learners
to exhibit their full potential and realize their
personal growth.

The learning environment and the immediate

community must work with each other to provide a
conducive learning environment. The learning
environment as part of the curriculum provides
facilities that allow the learning experiences to

schools.

2. Do you have a traditional view of a curriculum, a

progressive view, or both? Explain your view based
on your definition.

Answer:

Yes, the curriculum in the traditional sense is

the content and topics the learners must learn in a
specific period.

This view existed because the curriculum

focuses on what the school can provide to the
learners, not what the learners need to learn from
school. This traditional view explains why learning
is limited to the four corners of the classroom and
knowledge is within the bounds of the pages of the
book. In this kind of curriculum, knowledge rather
than competency is developed. However, we cannot
disregard knowledge as the foundation of learning
competency but learning that stops in knowledge are
futile. The curriculum must be experienced and
applied in a relevant and as much as possible
realistic environment. The traditional perspective
of a curriculum limits one’s learning to existing
knowledge only without allowing learning for
exploration and self-discovery. It provides learners
with a learning opportunity but with a set of fixed
answers or outputs, constraining them from
developing their full potential.
