(On Becoming a Professional Teacher)

1. A is a professor in a known state university. He engaged in a scandalous

relationship with B. The school officials filed a case against A contending that B
violated Article VIII of the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers. Are the
school officials correct? Explain.
The school heads can't file a case to A, because it clearly stated on Article VIII
Section 7 - In a situation where mutual attraction and subsequent love develop between
teacher and learner, the teacher shall exercise utmost professional discretion to avoid
scandal, gossip and preferential treatment of the learner. Since it is a state university
and the majority of students are 18 years old and above, they can have a relationship
with each other, but they must exercise the professionalism for them to avoid scandals
in school.
Personally, I don't understand the fuss. If the teacher takes advantage of the kid or
exhibits favoritism, I can see how that could be a possible issue. What harm can there
be if the teacher and the student are both consenting adults of the same legal age? The
relationship between students and professors has shifted significantly. No one holds
teachers to the same high standard of being a significant source of wisdom, leadership,
knowledge, and direction today. Not to mention, that is an absurd impression of what
professors are like. Today, a teacher is only someone who imparts knowledge in a
specific curriculum. There is no need to question whether or not a teacher's personal life
is "acceptable." Little about what instructors and students do in the classroom reflects
who they are as people.

2. A, a private school teacher is one of the most loved teacher in ABCDE School
for the Arts, Inc. During the celebration of teacher day, the parents gave A
refrigerator, a laptop, a tablet, pieces of jewelry, a huge amount of money among
others. B, the school principal filed a case against A alleging among others that
A violated Article VIII of the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers. Is the
principal correct? Explain.

 The principal did the wrong thing in filing a case against Teacher A. the principal
should’ve called the attention of the teacher and ask if those gifts are heartily given or
demanded by her to the parents. It was probably an innocent gift choice on the parent’s
part, but a teacher today has to be very careful. Giving a present as a token of thanks to
your child's teacher is quite fine. It's acceptable to spend a little money if you want to,
even though a straightforward handwritten note from you or your child is frequently the
nicest present you may give. To avoid being perceived as a bribe or an attempt to
persuade the instructor to favor your child, your spending should, nevertheless, be
comparable to that of other parents. But in the given situation, A didn't violate the Article
VIII of the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers because it clearly says here that the
parents gave it to Teacher A during the Teacher's Day. Teacher A can accept it
because the parents don't ask for anything in return. It clearly stated in Article VIII
Section 4. "A teacher shall not accept favours or gifts from learners, their parents or
others in their behalf in exchange for requested concessions, especially if undeserved
from the word" which obviously A didn’t do it.
3. A public school teacher is skilled in hosting pageants. During the Barangay
Nakakatakot fiesta all the teachers were involved in the preparations and in the
conduct of different activities. Being known as a good host, A was requested by
the Barangay Captain and the Principal to host the Mutya ng Barangay
Nakakatakot. A refused and stated that hosting a pageant is not one of his
obligations as a teacher. Is A correct? Explain.
 The teacher can refuse to Barangay Captain`s request to be the host for the said
event because it is true that it not one of his/her obligation as teacher but since the
captain appreciates and recognized his/her skill in hosting, he/she can show gratitude
and be the host for the event since all teachers were involved in the preparation. But
then again, it is not part of teacher`s responsibility, he/ she can still decline. 😊

4. A is currently employed in ABCDE School for the Arts, Inc., a private school
located in Mindanao. Under her contract she is obligated to render her services
until S.Y. 2022-2023. On March 15, 2021, the school principal of Barangay
Nakakatakot Elementary School, a public school, called her and said that due to
her being a qualified teacher she is to be appointed as public school teacher in
her school starting April 1, 2021. A accepted the appointment at Nakakatakot
Elementary School. ABCDE filed a case against A and argued that she violated
the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers among other laws. Is ABCDE
correct? Explain

 it’s okay if A accepts the appointment from the public school because it is stated in
Article V section 7 " A teacher may apply for a vacant position for which he is qualified;
provided that he respects the system of selection on the basis of merit and competence;
provided, further, that all qualified candidates are given the opportunity to be
considered" but he/she should finish her/his contract to the ABCDE School because the
school can file a case against her/him for “Breach of Contract”. The ABCDE school can
file a case or if agreed by both parties, the school will demand a monetary payment
equivalent to the remaining # of months of A in ABCDE school.
5. Supposing you are a member of the Board for Professional Teachers. You
have the power to delete or add some provisions in the Code of Ethics for
Professional Teachers. In consideration of the many changes in the society
today what particular provision of the Code would you like to delete? Explain.
What particular provision of the Code would you like to add? Explain.
 If I will have a chance to delete one provision in the Code of Ethics for teachers, it will
be the Section 7 of Article VIII. This section tells us that teacher is not allowed to have
intimate relationship with his/her student. Let`s us not be hypocrite. Who are we to
judge? Can we teach our heart whom to fall in love with? I promote partnerships
between teachers and students in particular situations, to sum up. In particular, if the
student has graduated, a teacher and student shouldn't compromise their relationship
for the sake of "professionalism." The titles that society has given to both educators and
students are merely fictitious. Focus on the person rather than what you anticipate them
to be.
