Education is a chamber for the students to learn and absorb the knowledge. It is also
simultaneously to form their behavior and action, especially the social awareness. Author
found a low level of students’ awareness during the observation either to their social
environment or to other people. The habit of looking after or helping other people should be
developed at the stage of primary school. Social awareness is crucial to develop in order to
avoid the children having negative attitude for instance, less sociable, careless, less empathy
on other people. It is also worsened by too selective while mingling with others and the
absences of cooperation culture. The social awareness on children can be meant as the act to
understand the feeling of other people with their own perspective. Understanding this
behavior has to be done with some practices where the children are conditioned to deal with
real-life situation. Therefore, the involvement of teachers is essential to stimulate and grow
their students’ social awareness.
This research is aimed to study the role of teachers to promote social care and
awareness of character-based education for students at grade 6 at Elementary School 73/XI
Desa Simpang Sungai Duren. The approach method used was qualitative-descriptive
approach through case study research. Data collection technique consisted of observation,
interview, field-based recording, and documentational study. To examine data validity, author
used credibility test with triangulation source, technique, and period.
In conclusion, it shows that the teachers have been taken into account in forming
social awareness of the students. They socially involve through two ways, both verbal and
nonverbal ways. Verbally formed characters are generated by giving some motivation,
advice, stories, warnings, punishment, and compliments. On the other hand, nonverbal
methods are transferred by accustoming with good behaviors and examples. The teachers
construct the students’ social awareness through their positive prominence, spontaneous
warning activities, environmental conditioning, and daily routines. Hence, highly
participating teachers are required in educational institutions to create well-mannered
students.
