Cultural Innovation Design

In the case of Innovation and Technology, the TAW project searches to look towards the
future of cultural identity.

In terms of the objectives, this component searches to:

● Produce a 3D model that represents the cultural future of their country, solving present
or future challenges in some area.
● Imagine new uses (products or architectonic constructions) based on the fusion of the
culture of their country in a globalized context, both available worldwide and competing
to maintain its identity.
● Build a budget to produce and/sell this product to other countries
● Share the innovative and hopefully functional design with others for them to consider
applications in their own realities.

Country Designs

Each country must construct a product, which can go from an architectural construction for
some sort of infrastructure need to an object that can be sold for a specific purpose. This
product must consider the cultural background of the country, the problems or needs of that
region (present or future) and the globalized context in which this design has to survive.
Considering that a lot of cultural objects and constructions are in fact a fusion of two or more
cultures, this is also accepted in this product.

Once the group has defined a rough sketch and a purpose for their product, each group will
collaborate in making a 3D design that represents the prototype of this product. It can be one
single piece or several individual pieces that assemble into the final product. Finally, each group
will print and assemble their final product and make a sales pitch (poster, video or any creative
outlet).

Exemplar: Turkey Infrastructure

Context: According to the World Report (2022), “The authoritarian and highly centralized
presidential government of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has set back Turkey’s human rights record
by decades, targeting perceived government critics and political opponents, profoundly
undermining the independence of the judiciary, and hollowing out democratic institutions.”

Problem: Create a safe place (or method) in which some sense of democracy and political
diversity can develop.

Proposal: Turkey in itself is a cultural melting pot, which incorporates European and Asian
features. In terms of architecture it has been able to incorporate very impressive infrastructure
for multiple purposes. Here we would build an umbrella building, which on the one hand serves
as a business center, but underground has the connectivity and space for people to meet and
discuss their positions on human rights issues. It also serves as an underground radio, divulging
important information to the Turkish people. The radio considers the fact that the governments
today have greater access to location based on satellites, so the radio waves become easier to
hide.

Exemplar: Turkey automobile

Context: According to the World Data Atlas (2022), “In July 2022, production of crude oil for
Turkey was 70.98 thousand barrels per day. Though Turkey production of crude oil fluctuated
substantially in recent months, it tended to increase through August 2021 - July 2022 period
ending at 70.98 thousand barrels per day in July 2022.”

Problem: Reduce the production of fossil fuels to promote cleaner energy, particularly in
transportation which is the major air pollutant in Turkey.

Proposal: To create a motorized transportation system based on clean energy that considers
the Turkish climate and needs. In Fig.1, we can see a modified motorcycle that has been
adapted for several passengers and considers weather conditions.

TAW 2022 Project

Full Collaboration Day
October 18th, 2022

For Today, you need to set-up the Cultural Innovation Design. For this, we can use the
Design Thinking Process for guidance.

In order to accomplish today’s objectives you can do the first steps of the Engineering Design
Process (Identify, Brainstorm and Design) to define what type of product you will build.

Today’s Objectives:
- Design a plan to guide your country’s product construction
- Identify roles and responsibilities of the participants of the group
- List the materials and coordinate how to obtain them for the different stages of the
project
- Create a group-managed project calendar for the project.
