A BRIEF INTRODUCTION
TO PSORIASIS

• Common, chronic, systemic inflammatory skin disease


• Over 60 million people of all ages and in all countries are affected
• Different phenotypes (e.g., psoriasis vulgaris, guttata, pustulosa)
• Noncommunicable with no clear cause or cure

• Common comorbidities include, but are not limited to,


• Arthritis, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic-syndrome
• Mental disorders such as social anxiety and depression

• Often causes a great physical, emotional and social burden and a


substantial negative impact on people’s lives

• Incorrect or delayed diagnosis, inadequate treatment options and


insufficient access to care are common

from low- and middle-income settings. In order to compare the
incidence and prevalence of psoriasis between regions and to
track their trends over time, data must be obtained in the same
way in different places [and …] standardized measurements are
needed, including […] case-finding methods, in order to provide
further insight into dermatological problems such as psoriasis.”
