The State Of New York

The English Duke of York, who subsequently became King James II of England,
gave his name to the state of New York. George Washington, who confidently
asserted that New York would become the headquarters of a new empire, is
credited with giving the state its moniker, the "Empire State."

The state of New York may be found in the northernmost region of the Eastern
United States. The Saint Lawrence River and Canada form the northernmost
boundary of the state of New York. The states of Vermont, Connecticut, and
Massachusetts make up New York's eastern boundaries. The southernmost
boundaries of the state of New York are formed by New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario make up the state of New York's western
boundary, which is not made up of land but rather bodies of water. The
Appalachians and the Central Plains are the two types of terrain that make up New
York.

"Excelsior," which translates to "ever onward," is the state motto of New York. In
1784, George Washington referred to New York as the "Seat of the Empire." New
Yorkers strive diligently to live up to their slogan and have made New York State
the national leader that it is today. The bluebird, which is New York's official state
bird, is the first item on my list of the state's symbols. The breast region of the
bluebird is red, and in the 1950s, bluebirds were not often observed. However,
these days, bluebirds are seen much more frequently. The state of New York first
used its current flag in 1778; it has a reproduction of the state coat of arms in the
middle of a field of dark blue. Above the shield is a globe with an eagle perched on
it, and the word "Excelsior" is written below the coat of arms. The sugar maple,
which yields a delicious sap that may be used to make syrup and sugar, is the
official state tree. The crown of the sugar maple tree is made up of its leaves,
which become brilliant in the fall. The firewood and furniture crafted from sugar
maple wood is of the highest quality. The rose is the official flower of the state of
New York.
