A copper wire has a diameter of 0.5 mm and resistivity of
2 1.6 × 10-8 Ω m.
(a) What will be the length of this wire to make its resistance 10Ω ?
(b) How much does the resistance change if the diameter is doubled?

Given : Resistivity (ρ) = 1.6 × 10-8 Ω m R× R×

(b) R ∝ ρ = ∴ l= ρ = 1.6 -8

Resistance (R) = 10 Ω d =l 0.5 mm
So, when the diameter of the wire is doubled, then its 10 × 3.14 × (0.25 × 10-3)2
Diameter (d) = 0.5 mm l = R = 10 Ω
resistance will become (1/2)2 or 1/4 1.6 × 10 -8
Radius (r) = 0.5 1.57

Current in both the circuit is I, resistance is 2Ω hence by using

the formula P=I2R, Power used in both cases will be the same.
Compare the power used in the 2 Ω resistor in each of the following circuits : (i) a
3 6 V battery in series with 1 Ω and 2 Ω resistors, and (ii) a 4 V battery in parallel
with 12 Ω and 2 Ω resistors.

Resistance (R2) = 1 Ω Case I : 1 Ω and 2 Ω resistors resistors are connected in
are connected in series parallel
Resistance (R3) = 12 Ω
RS = R1 + R2 In parallel combination
P.D. (V1) = 6 V
∴ RS = 1 + 2 potential difference
P.D. (V2) = 4 V remains same.
∴ RS = 3 Ω
To find : Power (P1) = ? ∴ potential difference
