CBTP Project for G3

Date of submission, Feb-20-2020

Here below are project titles for your CBTP projects along with sub groups assigned for
particular project. Titles are few of major challenges we face as community. Your job is to
find best fitting technology that can address the stated problem partially or fully. This
technologies exist some were. So adopt the technology to your communities need. First
evaluate the problems. Break in to smaller problems and look for possible solution. Carefully
understand how the technology works, and how feasible it is for the community. Be specific
in justifying why you chose that particular solution. Show us how ideal your technology is, in
solving the problem stated. Prepare document and PowerPoint slides and that will be
evaluated out of 40. Document should be max of 20 pages.

Note: Make sure the technology you introduce have some theoretical contribution of one of
the four streams of Electrical and computer engineering.

Content of the document.

Challenges for CBTP Project

This are challenges of our community. What technology can you propose to solve them?

 Toilet for densely populated community: Poor sanitation is linked to transmission of

diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea, hepatitis A, typhoid and polio and exacerbates
stunting. It also pollutes environment. Around 60% of the worlds, 4.5 billion people don’t
have a toilet that safely manages human waste at home. (G3-SubG7)
 Garbage collection and waste recycling: Finding place to throw waste is a challenge;
we live in the middle of pile of trash. Plastics are everywhere. This damages environment
especially the soil and it causes respiratory diseases. (G3-SubG3)
 Cloth dryer for condominium residents: Constructing large condominium for people is
considered as way of solving housing problem. Building condominiums brought its own
challenges though. Condominiums don’t have private outdoors, and residents need
enough heat and wind to dry clothes. However, it’s not safe to do that outside. The
residents are in huge demand of clothe dryer. (G3-SubG4)
 Water purification solution: Providing clean water is one of the greatest challenges
governments face these days. People wait days or travel miles to get clean water. In our
community, water is not that much of a problem, but finding clean one or cleaning it for
daily consumption is challenges. (G3-SubG1)
 Air refreshing and conditioning: Global warming and environmental pollution is one of
the world concerns. Having clean air and getting comfortable conditioned air is not
luxury; Smokes, dust, hazardous gases, extreme heat and cold are challenge for health.
Work environments, living houses, public areas and transport systems demand clean
favourable conditions. (G3-SubG8)
 Renewable energy solution for cooking: Large amount of wood and charcoals are
consumed for cooking food in our daily bases. These have great impact in the
environment. They release greenhouse gases like burning of other types of fuels does. It
has also high risks like fire and burns. The need of clean cook with minimal cost is clear.
A no smoke, no pollution time and money saving technology are in greater demand. (G3-
SubG5)
 Farming technology: Today's agriculture routinely uses sophisticated technologies such
as robots, temperature and moisture sensors, aerial images, and GPS technology. These
advanced devices and precision agriculture and robotic systems allow businesses to be
more profitable, efficient, safer, and more environmentally friendly. Our country where
more than 80% is farmer uses the very old traditional farming techniques. What Farming
technologies can you introduce for our farmer that can ease their life? (G3-SubG10)
 Food preserving: To increase the shelf-life of the food products, application of various
methods. Food preservation technologies include procedures that prevent microorganisms
reaching the food, processes that inactivate microorganisms, or procedures that prevent or
slow or inhibit the growth of microorganisms. What technology do you introduce to help
our farmers preserve their products to stay long and reach market fresh.
 Wood Carving: Jimma is rich in wooden materials, and many young individuals engage
in producing wooden products. Shaping and carving different arts on the woods is a
challenge though. Precision can’t be achieved working manually. This limits creativity.
The process also consumes time and labour. (G3-SubG11)
 Fruit reaping: In region with fertile soil and good weather, there is a potential for huge
fruit harvest. Mangos, avocados, and papayas are products of such region for instance.
However, among the produced fruits, more would fall to ground or rotten as a result of
not being collected early. Moreover, people cut the raw ones without knowledge. If there
is a better mechanism to collect timely, fruit growing farmers can benefit a lot from
market. (G3-SubG2)
 Health monitoring: Monitoring vital signs is very important in keeping health. Failing to
notice immediate changes would be fatal. We can prevent deaths with health monitoring
systems. What technology will you suggest for patients with intense medical follow-ups?
(G3-SubG9)
