SAFETY MEASURES IN THE LABORATORY

1. The laboratory is a place for earnest work. Exactness, neatness, and


cleanliness are essential to good work and good results. Never work in
messy surroundings.

2. Eating, drinking, and smoking are strictly forbidden in the laboratory.

3. Once inside the laboratory and before you begin your experiment, be sure
that your working areas are clear/clean. To protect the laboratory table,
use a rubber mat.

4. After the experiment, return all the equipment used.

5. Return the reagents to the stockroom. Return the iron stand and Bunsen
burner in their respective places.

6. Solid and liquid wastes should never be thrown into the sink to prevent
the plumbing from clogging and rusting. Instead, they should be disposed
off in proper waste receptacles, one for solid wastes and one for liquid
wastes. If no waste containers are available, ask your instructor for one.

7. Before leaving the laboratory, clean and wipe dry your table, arrange the
stocks properly, and check the gas and water outlets.

8. First and foremost, your laboratory gown protects you and your clothes
from boiling liquids or from corrosive solutions. The laboratory gown is
your first line of defence; so, wear it before getting inside the laboratory.

9. There is always danger from broken glass and corrosive liquid spills on the
floor; therefore, open sandals or bare feet are NOT allowed in the
laboratory.

10. You must have a neat appearance. Ladies should tie loose hair to reduce
hazard.
