Safety
Precautions
and
Laboratory Rules and Regulations

INTRODUCTION

One of the important lessons that every science student must learn and remember always
when working in the laboratory are proper decorum and basic rules and regulations. These are the
very first lessons taught among students and seen in every laboratory manual which are reiterated
to other higher year laboratory classes. This is to ensure safety not only for students but to other
laboratory personnel. Safety in the laboratory is not a sole responsibility of the personnel alone
but of the students too to keep them from incurring any laboratory experiment related accidents.

Objectives:
1. Introduce the required proper decorum
2. To familiarize and prepare the students of the needed PPEs when working in the lab
3. Know the importance of each in protecting the students while working in the laboratory

A. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

1. PROPER DECORUM

Here is a sample illustration for you to observe and identify on

what are the personal protective equipment (PPE) needed in working in the
laboratory as a compliance for the proper decorum requirement

Personal Protective Equipment

1. Safety Goggles They should be worn when inside the laboratory. They should be cleaned
properly so the user can see clearly This cover and protect he eyes from any
injury in case of an accident
2. Face masks This protect the face as well the nose from inhaling toxic fumes emitted by
the chemical while doing the experiment that might harm
the respiratory system
3. Laboratory Gown This should be worn at all times when inside the laboratory. It serves as the
first layer of protection against chemical spills. Their length must reach the
knee and preferably long sleeves to protect the arms.it is a must to button up
the when working.
4. Closed-toe shoes These are worn at all times in the laboratory to protect the feet from
any chemical drip or spills on the floor.
5. Safety GLoves These are worn when handling and testing chemicals to protect hand form
any chemicals spills or drip

6. Bouffant caps Must be worn by students to prevent from accidental dipping and or burning
of hair when working with chemicals and using the burner. Long hair should
be tied back.

Rules of Laboratory Safety

Before we start discussing the lab rules and regulations, let us first take a look, analyze and
identify any wrong practices by students who are conducting a laboratory class and doing an
experiment.

1.List any dangerous things you can see in this picture?

 There’s no eye protection or safety goggles inside laboratory.
 That first boy playing inside the laboratory.
 Its too near the chemical to their faces.
 They didn’t use the laboratory properly.
 They didn’t place the things or tools appropriated location.
 They didn’t wear a PPE uniform.

2.Give me a reason why they are dangerous?

 The reason why it’s dangerous are because you can go blind or you can get an allergy when the
chemical lands on it.
 You can get burned or you can cause trouble with your lab partner/group.

3.What should be done instead?

 First call the professor or give first aid if it is serious.
 Keep away from the spilled chemical.
 Use properly the laboratory tools.
 Donot eat foods inside the laboratory.
 Label all the chemical to know what is it.

Before you start and experiment

1. Never enter the laboratory room unless you are permitted to do so.
2. Read carefully the experiment procedure before coming to class. know the theories and
principles involved. You are expected to know this when performing and experiment
3. Make a flow chart of the procedure so it will be easier for your to performed the proper
sequencing of the procedures.
4. Place your things on the appropriate location so they will not clutter your working area.
5. Do not follow directions mechanically, but know the reason(s) for every step. Know why as
well as how. This will make you more aware of what you are expecting from the outcome of a
proper done experiment.
6. Clean your assigned working area before beginning your experiment. Good work, good results
can only be attained when you observe neatness, cleanliness and exactness.
7. Work on the experiment only when the instructor is present or when you have given
permission to start.
4

8. Be sure that your apparatus is clean before doing your experiment. Clean them with
detergent, wash thoroughly with water and dry them up.
9. Check glassware for any crack before using for it might weakened and break during the use
and may cause injury.
10. Always know the precautions (chemicals used and the procedures) to be observe for each
experiment
11. Know the location of the fire extinguisher, eyewash, fire safety blanket and the first aid kit (this
may be requested from the lab technician if needed)
12. mobile phones are not allowed during the class unless instructed for documentation purposes
only.
13. Notify the instructor or lab tech for any spills and drips on the working table or floor for proper
cleaning instructions.

When performing an experiment

1. Wear your PPEs
2. Read the labels on every chemical reagent bottle before taking out sample.
3. Put label on your specific test tube or container on where you are going to transfer the
reagent.
4. Never touch chemicals with your bare hands nor taste any chemicals even the label indicated
like SALT.
5. Avoid contamination or reagents. use spatula separately for solid (powder or crystal reagents).
Use pipette or dropper (base on the amount to be extracted) separately for liquid reagents
6. Never return excess clean chemical back to the reagent bottle, instead place them in a clean
vessel (test tube or beaker with label) and you may give it to you other classmate who will be
using the same reagent. If not you may place them in a collecting bottles or jars right after the
experiment.
7. When transferring large amount, you may pour from the reagent bottle to the experiment
container, this needs practice to minimize of prevent drips and spill. Make sure your hand is
over the label, not on the neck of the bottle nor at the base, this will help you control the
pouring better.
8. Avoid wasteful use of reagent, get only the specified amount stated from the procedure
9. Never smell reagent or chemicals being tested directly, instead practice “wafting technique” to
prevent any effect of the strong scent or smoke from the test tube. Inhale cautiously.
10. Never look down directly from the container (test tube or beakers) being heated or use in
mixing chemical, view the reaction from the outside.
11. Do not perform unauthorized experiment. Never leave the experiment without someone to
look after the reaction that taking place.
12. Do not leave the burner during heating. Always use non-luminous flame unless instructed to
use yellow flame. Extinguish the flame when not in use.
13. Do not pour the used chemical directly on the sink, ask the lab instructor or technician for the
waste chemical container.
14. Do not point the test tube being being to anybody angle the test tube at least 45-90 degrees
when heating reagent in the test tube
15. For the chemicals that are allowed to be poured directly into sink, dilute them first with water
before draining down the sink.
5

16. When diluting acids, ALWAYS add acid to water, NEVER pour water to acid.
17. Strictly eating and drinking is not allowed inside the laboratory.
18. Our school is a non-smoking campus, more so smoking is strictly prohibited in the
laboratory.

After the experiment

1. Dispose all used chemical to their proper collecting bottles.
2. Dilute with water those chemicals that are allowed to be drained into the sewage.
3. Clean all the apparatus with water and detergent before returning them back to the stock
room and or lockers.
4. Clean your working area, never leave the room with a dirty working table.
5. Close all gas cock/valve. Make sure the faucet is proper close to prevent leaking of water
6. Wash your hand with soap and water before touching your things and or your face and hair.
7. Grooming is not allowed inside the lab

This activity is presented to properly inform and instruct the students on what to do during
laboratory classes. Upon reading and understanding the rules and regulation, it is expected of you to
be cautious in performing the experiment carefully for your own safety.

This is to certify that I have read and understand the rules and regulation stated above. and I agree
to abide by these rules, to follow instructor’s directions and act responsively at all times.
