Test on sample proportion

For a specific product (OD x W.Th and steel grade) the average scrap on a year basis is p
in two days we had very different results as reported in data1

Question:
1 Check if the two days are significantly different from the average

Solution
1 the null hypothesis is that samples are random extractions from a population
having the defined proportion p
or the samples have statistically the same proportion of the population
2 confidence level 0,95
3 the statistic test Z requires
- proportion of the sample
- sample size and dof
4 the Z score requires
- probability or significance level
5 when statistic is greater than score
we cannot accept the null hypothesis
something has changed in production

We learned to
- calculate the statistic Z
- calculate the score Z using the Excel function NORMSINV(…)
-compare statistic and score
Percentage of scrap

Yearly average

p 0.0182 1.82%

Null Hypothesis sample is coming from population having the same proportion

Z statistic 3.237791

Z score 1.959964

Z statistic is greater than Z score We cannot accept the Null Hypothesis
