“The architect should strive con nually to

the ensemble of the rooms should then

that comfort and u lity may go hand in

‐ Frank Lloyd Wright
M ost of our clients have never hired an architect before and are vaguely aware of the scope
of services that an architect can provide for their project and the handful of building
codes that a project must comply with. As architects specializing in residential and commercial
design, a good portion of our early contact with a new client involves client education as to
what they should be expecting from us and how the design process will unfold over time,
resulting in the successful realization of their project.
Before getting too far along on a project, it’s a good idea to assess your strengths and
weaknesses, time commitment, and level of interest and use that information to decide whether
you need to hire an architect.
Choose your key team members – especially your architect and contractor – very carefully. No
other decision will have as big an impact on your project’s success. You will be working closely
with these professionals more as partners than as employer‐employee. Good communication
and give‐and‐take will be key. So, ind professionals who are competent and trustworthy and
who are a good it for you. Find professionals and people who you will enjoy working with.
You probably think that working with an architect costs too much money – that you’re going to
spend so money on the construction of your project and you don’t think an architect is worth
the added cost. WRONG! Architects have a unique skill set and expertise to provide various

On a daily basis, we see people moving projects into the design phase before the research is started. This is like a
doctor starting surgery without a thorough diagnosis or trying to build a house on a bad foundation.
That is why we created the Rapid Project Planning Pack. Now, you have a simple process to help you move
through the Research Phase.
If you follow this tool, you will reduce project risk and improve project design.
The Roadmap
This is important … please read carefully.
R ight now, you should be in the Research Phase. This is where you are gathering information and playing
around with ideas. At the point you want to get serious, you will want to check the feasibility of your ideas
and understand what the project constraints are. If you work with me, we will move to the Analysis Phase by con-
ducting a Needs and Options Review to eliminate assumptions, identify constraints and find your best options. You
will receive a document that can be used by me or any other architect that will ensure you reduce project risk and
get the best options for your site and budget.
