ACTIVITY NO. 7

IV. ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES

Name: Aguilos, Ara TOPIC: OCEANS

Major/Year: BSE SCIENCE-1 Deadline: JANUARY 09, 2023

A. SELF-CHECK ACTIVITY:

Guide Questions:
1. Our country is an archipelago which means islands have long stretches of continental
shelves and there is abundance of fish, why many of our fishermen are still struggling
to make a living and in a state of constant poverty?
The Philippines is an archipelago of 7,641 islands. The total sea area, including
the EEZ, is 2,200,000 km2. The country's shelf and coral reef areas are 18.46
million hectares and 2.7 million hectares respectively. The vast resources of the
West Philippine Sea provide livelihoods and food security, but Filipino fishermen
who navigate these waters must fend for themselves.
2. How do wave erosion along our very long coastlines be prevented? Are there
efforts or initiatives from LGUs to alleviate this?
Winds, waves, and currents easily move loose sands and soils in coastal
areas, rapidly changing the position of coastlines. Erosion and coastal
erosion are often important features of the ecological character of coastal
zones and their environments. Aside from the influence of human activity,
these processes are simply natural evolutionary phenomena. Human
activities along river basins, watersheds, and offshore coasts often
exacerbate coastal erosion in many places.
3. Why is that oceans are very important to human survival and the economy of a
country that made the Chinese government occupy part of the West Philippine Sea
regardless of the arbitral ruling issued by the Hague-based UN-backed tribunal in
2016?
The court ruled that the Spratly Islands are not islands in the legal sense, but
rocks or tides and currents. These include the aptly named Mischief Reef, a
submerged feature that has occupied China since 1995. This is he's one of seven
localities where Beijing has dumped thousands of tons of sand and concrete
since filing a lawsuit in 2013. Mischief Reef is now home to a military airfield
and port facility, but is clearly part of the Philippine EEZ. This means China is
in an illegal occupation.

B. ENRICHMENT ACTIVITY:

1. Search about at least two laws designed to protect our oceans from pollution and
preserve the remaining resources we still have. Give your comments on its
implementations and the government’s efforts to monitor it.

EPA's Marine Disposal Management Program plays an important role in the

protection and conservation of marine and coastal resources. EPA regularly
evaluates public inquiries about ocean dumping and provides technical
assistance to other agencies to ensure that ocean dumping is properly regulated
to protect human health and the environment.
