INTRODUCTION

● Noise is defined as a sound that is loud or unpleasant that causes disturbance (Oxford Dictionary).

● Sound can be a form of environmental pollution.

● It has been the interest of many studies as it is found to have been linked to numerous health risks,

including hearing loss and increased stress levels, and cognitive impairments in children such as reduced

reading comprehension and memory recall. (Chepesiuk, 2005; Bodin, Albin, Ardö, et. al., 2009; Spreng,

2000; Thomas, 2002)

● Noise pollution in schools is also becoming a serious problem as it negatively affects the educational system's

employees, which includes students, instructors, and school administration staff, both in their professional and

personal lives.

● Background noise that can be observed in schools can be divided into two main categories: both internal and external

sources (Smaldino, Crandell, Kreisman, John & Kreisman, 2008). The neighborhood's traffic and nearby noisy

activities are typically associated with the external sources. The voices produced by students, instructors, and all

other staff members within the school are connected to the internal sources.
● The present study tries to use acoustics, the science concerned with the production, control, transmission, reception,

and effects of sound as an intervention to solve internal noise problems in the school.

● This is in light of some limitations about traditional room acoustics commonly employed in buildings such as wall

soundproofing solutions and commercial sound absorptive panels

● The study set its focus on creating and testing alternatives to acoustic panels using cheap materials that can be found

at home.

● As a primary need for institutions such as schools to effectively control noise pollution for the well-being of students

and teachers, the study found it necessary to create cheaper but effective acoustic panels as a way to improve

classroom acoustics in Second Philippine International School.

THE CREATION OF CHEAPER ACOUSTIC PANEL

ALTERNATIVES USING HOMEMADE
SOUNDPROOFING MATERIALS

CAPSTONE INVESTIGATORY PROJECT

OBJECTIVES
This investigatory project aims to utilize

homemade soundproofing materials to

create and test cheaper alternatives to

commercial acoustic panels.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Using the objective above, this project aims to create an effective acoustic panel from materials available

at home. The study answered the particular questions:

■ Is it possible to create an effective acoustic panel from home gathered soundproofing materials?

■ Is it possible to manufacture homemade effective acoustic panels at a lower cost than commercial

acoustic panels?

■ Is the device created able to improve the acoustics and soundproofing of classrooms in SPIS?
HYPOTHESIS
The project intended to create an effective homemade acoustic panel at a lower cost
than its commercial counterpart. Upon conducting the study, the following was
hypothesized:

SCOPE & LIMITATIONS

■ The study is primarily focused on creating cost-effective alternatives to commercial

acoustic panels by using homemade materials with sound absorption qualities.

■ The experiments are going to be performed in the library of Second Philippine

International School on February X, 2023.

■ The study will only make use of the materials listed in the experimental group and a
random sample brand of a commercial acoustic panel to test and compare the
effectiveness of its sound cancellation compared to a home-made acoustic panel.
