PAY ATTENTION TO THE WEAK AREAS

You should consider placing some acoustic treatment between the
speakers and your front wall.

DON’T FORGET THE CORNERS

If possible, mount some of your acoustic foam across corners of
your room.

USE FURNITURE
Acoustic treatment can also be placed directly behind you on the
back wall of your room. It can also be extremely helpful to place a
couch at this location−recall that any soft porous material will
absorb sound.

PLANNING: MATERIAL & PLACEMENT
The preferred material for DIY sound diffusers is wood. Wood is robust,
easy to build with and offers great acoustic properties.

SAW THE WOOD DOWN TO SIZE & SAND

Cutting the wood to size is the most time-consuming part of
this DIY process.

CONSTRUCT THE SOUND DIFFUSER

Constructing the sound diffuser is simply a case of stacking or layering the
different wood pieces on top of the backboard in the calculated pattern.

MOUNT YOUR SOUND DIFFUSER

Where you hang the diffuser is completely up to you and should be based
on the purpose of the room and the location of the audio source.

Fiberglass panels are cheap but in
this case you get more what you
pay for.
These fibers are made of metal,

currents that you will breathe in. Along
with this health risk, fiberglass panels
have poor acoustical performance.

They do absorb energy and are cheap.

However, they over absorb the middle range
frequencies which has a negative impact on
music and voice. Fiberglass panels are not a
quality acoustic tool.

Application of Sound Diffuser in
general
application
Diffusers are used in spaces where acoustics is a critical
requirement. They can be used to improve speech intelligibility in
railway stations, theatres and teleconferencing rooms and are used in
auditoria and studios where quality of music is important.

- Place the sound diffuser over the primary reflective point of a sound
source.
- They are most effective on the rear walls of listening areas so they
can diffuse sounds from the most prominent sound sources.
- Calculate where the primary reflective points are and place your
sound diffusers there. The primary diffuser location since that's where
the main speakers are generally facing.
Use in Architectural Acoustics in
general
Sound diffusers are designed to scatter or disperse sound waves, thereby
reducing standing waves and echoes to improve sound clarity. Diffusers (or
Diffusors) are typically used in critical listening environments like recording
studios, control rooms, music production and live music rooms.
use

Unlike sound absorbers that trap or eliminate the sound, sound diffusers
maintain the “live” ambience, while at the same time reducing standing waves
and slap echo. Diffusers may be manufactured from molded plastic or E-Glass
and may be wrapped or covered in various fabrics.

Sound diffusers are often used in combination with other materials such as
sound absorbers, bass traps, ceiling clouds or other provisions to achieve the
desired results for the application.
