Discussion:
Turbine wheels and discs are life limited by either operating hours or by
cycles. All new turbine wheels and discs introduced into service since Mar~h
24, 1978, are life limited by cycles. Prior to this date turbine wheels and
discs were life limited by operating hours but may be converted to cycles In
accordance with Airworthiness Directive 78-04-05, Amendment 39-3143, dated
February 17, 1978 which provides a method of converting from hours to cycles,
and gives part numbers of turbine wheel.s affected. Life limits ai~d cycle deCf-
R nition are contained in S/B TPE331-72-0019, 72-0180, 72-0476, or 72-7002.
Life limited part log cards are required to provide a history of critical:arts.
la~-´•:;B A life liai´•´•ted part which isre´•turned for repair or exchange without a hij’tory
of operation, and for which no history can be determined, must be scrapped, with
charges to the customer.
There are four (4) instances for which initiation of a life limit part log may
be necessary:
1. New engines delivered with life limited parts and card lost or unavailable.
2. Repair engines which have had life limited parts installed andno log card
provided.
3. Engines containing turbine wheels or discs which have been conve’rted from
hours to cycles.
Included in this letter are two engine sets of life limited part logs. The in-
structions for completing the cards are as follows (jee figure 1):
For new engines or new spare parts without life limited parts cards:
(A) Complete (1), (2), and (3) from information provided on critical parts list
included in engine log book for all turbine wheels or discs.
(B) Enter (4) date engine was accepted by Quality Assurance as found on D.S.C.
(Data Sheet, Customer) i?~engine log book.

(0) Enter (5) engine serial number.
R (E) Enter (7) and (8)-zero for time in cycles and hours on part for current
R installation.
(F) Enter (9) and (10) time in cycles and hours on part when it was installed.
(G) (11) Note method used to determine time in hours and cycles and (12) sign
name and FAA number to attest. to accuracy of entries.
For engines which have converfed lifelimited parts from hours to cycles:
(A) Complete (1), (2),‘and (3) from information provided on critical parts list
included in engine log book or repair build document if parts were replaced
at hot section inspection.
(J) (12) Sign name and FAA number to attest to accuracy of entries.
Used spare parts which do not have life limited log cards must have cards

When.a life limited part is scrapped or permanently retired from service, life
