This page transmits Revision 1 to CFM56-7B Service Bulletin 72-0423 dated May 23, 2003.
This Service Bulletin has been revised to update the accomplishment instruction and to delete engine
models withdrawn from the type certificate.

and 4. APPENDIX A - PARTS PROGRESSION CHART to update the Service Bulletin information for
the T49.5 EGT retaining plate.
Engines that have previously complied with this Service Bulletin are not affected.

B. Description
This Service Bulletin gives the instructions to make the replacement of broken studs of
T49.5 EGT Retaining Plate 338-121-701-0 and 338-121-702-0. Repair can be done on
wing or on LPT rotor/stator module, LPT major module and on engine assembly in shop.
The repaired Retaining Plate 338-121-701-0 or 338-121-702-0 will have to be discarded at
the next shop visit. Refer to figure 1.

NOTE 2: Reworking of broken stud can be possible in shop for each T49.5 EGT sensor
position. It is possible on wing for partial T49.5 EGT sensor position, depending
on the accessibility.

engine removals.

To permit the replacement of broken stud from T49.5 EGT sensor Retaining Plate
338-121-701-0 or 338-121-702-0.
The replacement of a broken stud by a Bolt J644P09B does not force engine removal
and disassembly of the LPT rotor/stator.

G. Manpower
After you get access to the Retaining Plate 338-121-701-0 or 338-121-702-0, you will need
approximately 1.0 man-hour to rework each broken stud.

3. ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS
NOTE: Make sure that free access is available for drilling and tapping process. You must remove
the EGT Sensor Probe (T49.5 location) before you do this procedure.
(a) Make sure the LPT module area of the engine is cooled enough before you
do this procedure.
(b) If necessary, remove the T49.5 probe. Refer to Aircraft Maintenance Manual
(AMM), ATA 77-21-01.
NOTE: Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tool(s) and other items.
(a) Put the airplane back to its usual condition. Refer to AMM, ATA 77-21-01.
NOTE: The engine is installed on maintenance stand or handling supports, refer to Engine
Shop Manual (ESM), ATA 72-00-00, Disassembly 001.
C. Replacement of broken studs on Low Pressure Turbine (LPT) major module in shop:
NOTE: The LPT major module assembly is installed on mobile stand, refer to ESM,
ATA 72-00-03, Removal 001 or on buildup fixture, refer to ESM, ATA 72-00-03,
Disassembly 001.
(a) Use the serviceable remaining tack welded stud to calculate the length of the
remaining broken tack welded stud shank. Refer to figure 2.
(b) Install a locally manufactured tool on the serviceable remaining tack welded
stud. Refer to figure 3.
(c) Make sure that the center pin of tooling engage correctly in bore previously
occupied by the EGT sensor probe.
(d) Tighten the tooling to the LPT case with the original nut on the serviceable
remaining tack welded stud.
(e) Make sure the tooling is correctly installed against the LPT case.
(f) Make a selection to get the correct drill guide sleeve (sleeve is identified as
"clearance guide") for a 0.2500 inch (6,35 mm) drill.
(g) Install it and attach the junction between the drilling sleeve and the locally
manufactured tool with a retaining screw. Refer to figure 3.
(h) Do a drop check from the top of the drill guide sleeve to the EGT sensor probe
location of the LPT case.
WARNING: DO NOT DRILL INTO THE STUD HEAD WHEN REMOVING THE BROKEN
STUD SHANK. BEFORE DRILLING REFER TO STANDARD PRACTICE
MANUAL (SPM) ATA 70-44-50, TASK 70-44-50-320-006 DRILLING.
(a) With the dimensions obtained and the dimensions provided in figure 2,
calculate the required drill depth to remove broken stud shank.
(b) Make a selection to get the correct drill collar for the 0.2500 inch (6,35 mm)
drill (collar is identified with drill size 0.2500 inch (6,35 mm).
(c) Fit the collar to the drill 0.2500 inch (6,35 mm) diameter and set it to the
required depth as calculated. Refer to paragraph 3.E.(1).
(d) Insert drill into tooling sleeve and drill to a depth permitted by the collar to
remove the remaining broken stud shank. Refer to figure 3.
(a) Remove drill guide sleeve (clearance guide) and replace it with the other drill
guide sleeve (identified as "tapping drill guide") for a 0.2188 inch (5,57 mm)
drill. Refer to figure 3.
(b) Do a drop check from the top of the drill guide sleeve, to EGT sensor probe
location, of the LPT case.
(c) With dimensions obtained and the dimensions provided in figure 2, calculate
the required drill depth, to drill through the tack welded stud head and back
plate only sufficient, to break through the back plate to be tapped in the stud
head and back plate.
(a) Install correct collar (collar identified with drill size 0.2188 inch (5,57 mm)) to
drill 0.2188 inch (5,57 mm) diameter and set it to required depth as calculated.
Refer to paragraph 3.E.(2).
(b) Insert drill into tooling sleeve and drill per Standard Practice Manual ATA
70-44-50, TASK 70-44-50-320-006 Drilling, to a depth permitted by the collar
to pierce the stud head and the back plate. Refer to figure 3.
(c) Remove drill guide sleeve (identified as "tapping drill guide") and replace it with
the other drill guide sleeve (clearance guide).
(a) Do a drop check from the top of the drill guide sleeve to the EGT sensor probe
location of the LPT case. Refer to figure 3.
(b) With dimensions obtained and the dimensions provided in figure 2, calculate
the required tap depth to tap through the tack welded stud head and back
plate only.
(c) With a 0.250-28UNF tap, set the collar 0.2500 inch (6,35 mm) to the required
depth.
(d) Insert tap into tooling sleeve and tap the head of the tack welded stud
and back plate. Refer to Standard Practice Manual , ATA 70-44-60, TASK
70-44-60-320-007 Tapping.
(e) Make sure that all debris are vacuumed away. Unscrew nut and remove the
tooling.
NOTE: Identify the repair by marking the Service Bulletin number 72-0423 on the
locally manufactured washer. Refer to Standard Practice Manual , ATA
70-10-12, TASK 70-10-12-350-005 Vibro-Peen Marking and refer to figure 3
and figure 4.
(a) Reinstall EGT sensor probe. For the location adjacent to the modified broken
tack welded stud, install the locally manufactured washer with a wire locking
hole under the nut. Refer to figure 1 and figure 4.
(b) Apply Grease Molycote P37 (CP2544) on the remaining stud thread and on
the new bolt thread.
NOTE: The bolt must be more than one filet and half above the retaining plate
and must protrude from the tapped stud head..
(c) Control the protrusion between the bolt J644P09B end and the tapped stud
head.
(d) Check that the new Bolt J644P09B protrudes from the black plate whithout
being in contact with the insulation blanket.
(f) Install Bolt J644P09B to the modified tapped tack welded stud head.
(g) Make sure the washer is located correctly for wire locking adjacent bolt and
torque the nut and bolt to 100-110 lb.in. (11,5-12,5 N.m). Refer to figure 4.
(h) Wire lock the bolt to the washer under the nut with Safety Cable (CP8006) .

Locking Methods.
NOTE: In the case of two broken studs replacement, only one after the other,
wire lock between the two head bolt holes. Let the already installed
locally manufactured washer for SB reference identification.
(i) Do a drop check from the top of the EGT Sensor Probe to the LPT Case.
With dimension obtained, and the dimension provided in figure 2, calculate to
confirm protrusion of the bolt thread through the modified tack welded stud
head.
NOTE 1: Identify the repair by marking the Service Bulletin number 72-0423
on the applicable Log Book.
