This Service Bulletin is applicable to all CFM56-5B engines.

The high pressure compressor (HPC) is affected by this Service Bulletin.

B. Description

This Service Bulletin provides CFM recommendations for an HPC borescope

inspection (BSI), in order to estimate the physical condition of the HPC on a periodic
basis.

C. Compliance

Category 2
CFM recommends that you do this Service Bulletin as soon as possible without
effect on revenue service for engines with 10,000 plus or minus 1,000 cycles since
new or since last HPC blade piece-part inspection exposure per CFM56-5B engine
shop manual (ESM), 72-31-01, 72-31-02, and 72-31-03, with a recurring inspection
at 5,000 cycles intervals with an adjustment of plus or minus 800 cycles.

Impact C

This recommendation is to address a condition that may result in a

Non-Event operational disruption, Unscheduled Engine Removals (UER),
Out-Station-Removals or Aircraft on the Ground (AOG).
NOTE: This Service Bulletin can be accomplished on wing.

This Service Bulletin is offered to improve the reliability and performance of your
CFM product, or to help prevent the occurrence of the event or condition described
in this Service Bulletin. If the operator elects not to participate in the bulletin, that
decision will be taken into consideration by CFM in evaluating future product
performance issues that may arise in the operator’s fleet.

D. Concurrent Requirements

None.

E. Reason

(1) Objective:

To improve reliability and reduce significant events.

(2) Condition:

CFM56-5B engines have exhibited HPC damage from normal engine

operating conditions.

(3) Cause:

CFM56-5B HPC damage has been recorded during required AMM level HPC
BSI checks due to engine stall events.

(4) Improvement and Inspection:

CFM recommends an HPC BSI to monitor the health of engines operated.

(5) Substantiation:

Substantiation is by analysis of fleet experience.

F. Approval

The technical content of this Service Bulletin is approved by the FAA and under the
Authority of DOA No. EASA.21J.086.

G. Manpower
