ANALYSES MAINTENANCE

The process of identifying required


maintenance functions through analysis
of a fixed or assumed design and determining the most effective means of accomplishing these functions.
A number of parts, subassemblies, or
ASSEMBLY
any combination thereof joined together
to perform a specific function and
which can be disassembled without destruction of designed use.
NOTE: The distinction between an assembly and a subassembly is not always exact - an assembly in one instance may
be a subassembly in another where it
forms a portion of an assembly.
AIR TRANSPORT ASSOCIATION An organization of primarily domestic
U.S. Air Transport carriers with the

BUILD GROUP (ASSEMBLY
A group of parts as defined in the
engine build specification.

The operating cycles an item has


accumulated since last overhaul.

REFURBISHMENT
(CSR)

The operating cycles an item has


accumulated since last refurbishment.

CALIBRATION

The application of specifically known


and accurately measured input to
ensure that an item will produce
specifically known output which is
accurately measured or indicated.
Calibration includes adjustment or
recording of corrections, as appropriate.

CANCELLED

Determined to be no longer usable in


a particular former application.

DELETED

See cancelled

ENGINE BUILDUP HARDWARE

Those portions of the following systems which are on the Nacelle side of
the airframe/nacelle interface such
as: fuel, hydraulic, pneumatic, fire
detection, electrical, generating and
cooling systems, engine control,
nacelle drain and vent, starting,
nacelle and engine instrumentation,
inlet anti-icing, and engine vibration monitoring.

ENGINE BUILD SPECIFICATION


(EBS)

A breakdown of an engine bill of


materials into groups of parts required to support a sequence of tasks
required to build a section of the
engine.

ENGINE FLIGHT
HOURS

The accumulated engine operating time


intervals between wheels-off and
wheels-on.

ENGINE OPERATING CYCLE

A completed engine thermal cycle


including the application of takeoff
power.

ENGINE SECTIONALIZATION

The disassembly of the engine into


major Build Groups.

Engine Pressure Ratio


(EPR)

A prime practical measure of engine


thrust.

ENGINE

The basic engine assembly plus its


essential accessories as supplied by
the engine manufacturer.

Engine Build Unit (EBU)

The EBU comprises the engine plus


those additional components necessary
to dress the engine for installation
into the nacelle to further form the
powerplant. (REF. SECTION 3)

FACILITY COMPLEX

The physical plant including support


equipment required to perform all of
the functional tasks that satisfy a
level of logistics support.

FACILITY EQUIPMENT

Those items used for engine maintenance which are commercially available from vendors other than IAE and
generally are not specific to a single engine model. Such equipment ranges in complexity from bridge crane
systems to micrometers and hand files.

FACILITY ITEMS

A major functional area of a facility


which may have a department status.

FLYING HOURS
(AIRBORNE)

FLYING HOURS
(BLOCK)

The accumulated time intervals between wheels-off and wheels-on.


The number of hours incurred by an
airplane from the moment it first
moves for a flight until it comes to
rest at its intended blocks at the
next point of landing, or returns to
its departure point prior to takeoff.
NOTE: Push-out from the gate is
considered as part of block hours.

FOREIGN OBJECT
DAMAGE (FOD)

Damage to any portion of the engine


caused by impact or ingestion or
birds, stones, hail or other debris.

HEAVY MAINTENANCE FACILITY

A facility limited to the accomplishment of all engine (powerplant)


maintenance performed short of
overhaul with the engine removed
from the aircraft.

HOT SECTION INSPECTION (HSI) Inspection of the combustion area.


INSPECTION

An examination of an item against a


specific standard.

ITEM, LIFE LIMITED

ITEM

Any level of hardware assembly


(i.e., system, subsystem, module,
accessory, component, unit, part,
etc. )

LINE MAINTENANCE FACILITY

A facility limited to the accomplishment of all engine (powerplant)


maintenance performed with the engine installed in the aircraft.

MAINTENANCE

Those actions required for restoring


or maintaining an item in serviceable condition, including servicing, repair modification, overhaul,
inspection and determination of
condition.

MANDATORY
MODIFICATION

A modification classified as compulsory by the local civil aviation


authorities.

MEAN TIME BETWEEN


REMOVALS (MTBR)

A performance figure calculated by


dividing the total unit flying hours
accrued in a period by the number of
unit removals (scheduled plus unscheduled) that occured during the
same period.

MEAN TIME BETWEEN


FAILURE (MTBF)

A performance figure calculated by


dividing the total unit flying hours
(airborne) accrued in a period by
the number of unit failures that
occured during the same period.
NOTE: Where total unit operating
hours are available, this may be
used in lieu of total unit flying
hours.

MODIFICATION

A change instructed by a Service


Bulletin.

MODULE

A work package determined by the


engine customer to implement the
Modular Overhaul Concept

Note that a module may be a stackup of several Build Groups, a Build


Group and components of another
Build Group or only a component of a
Build Group.
NACELLE

The hardware enveloping the engine


up to the airframe structure/engine
mount interface. The Nacelle consists of at least the following
major components: inlet (nose) cowl,
wing engine fan cowl doors, tail
engine fan cowl doors (if required),
fan duct/f an thrust reverser,
primary nozzle and plug, Engine
Buildup Hardware, and engine mounts.

OVERHAUL FACILITY

A facility that can accomplish


overhaul (zero time) of the engine
(powerplant) and its parts and accessory components.

OVERHAUL
(RECONDITION)

The work necessary to return an item


to the highest standard specified in
the relevant manual.

PART

One piece, or two or more pieces


joined together which are not normally subject to disassembly without
destruction of designed use.

QUICK ENGINE CHANGE


UNIT (QECU)

A maximum neutral engine plus those


parts making it peculiar to a particular position on an aircraft.

RECONDITION
( OVERHAUL)

The work necessary to return an item


to the highest standard specified in
the relevant manual.

REFURBISH
(ENGINE, MODULE)

To restore an engine or engine


module to ensure that cost-effective
operation is achieved.

REPAIR

To make an item serviceable by replacing or processing failed or


damaged parts.

RESTORATION

That work (on/off the aircraft),


necessary to restore the item to a
specific standard.

REWORK

To carry out work on an uninstalled


item.

REPLACE

The action whereby an item is removed and another item is installed


in its place for any reason.

SECTION

A major functional area of a department of a facility.

SERVICING

Any act of replenishment for the


purpose of maintaining the inherent
design operating capabilities of an
item.

SERVICE BULLETIN (SB)

The only document issued by the


manufacturer to notify the airline
of recommended modifications, substitution of parts, special inspections/checks, reduction of existing
life limits or establishment of
first time life limits and conversion from one engine model to another.
NOTE: ATA Specification No. 100
describes the recommended content of
the document.

SHOP VISIT
(ENGINE SHOP VISIT)

An engine removal is classified as a


"shop visitwwwhenever the subsequent
engine maintenance performed prior
to reinstallation entails one of the
following:
a) separation of pairs of major
mating engine flanges.
NOTE: Separation of flanges
solely for purpose of shipment, without subsequent internal maintenance, is not a
nshop visitn.
or b) removal of a disk, hub, or spool.

SUPPORT EQUIPMENT

Equipment required on the ground to


support the operation and maintenance of the aircraft and all its
airborne equipment.

SPECIAL SUPPORT EQUIPMENT


(Tools)

Those engine manufacturer designed


items used for engine maintenance
support which are generally unique
to a specific engine model.

SERVICE PROCESS
OPERATION PROCEDURE
(SPOP)

Pratt & Whitney approved procedures


for processing engine parts during
maintenance and repair. SPOP procedures are available covering activities within the following sections in the shop: cleaning, inspection (fluorescent penetrant, magnetic particle), plating and stripping, surface treatment and painting, heat treatment, grinding, and
blending.
Two or more parts which form a portion of an assembly or component
replaceable as a whole, but having a
part or parts which are individually
replaceable.

TIME SINCE OVERHAUL
(TSO)

The time accumulated since a given


item was overhauled.

TIME SINCE REF'URBISHMENT


(TSR)

The time accumulated since a given


item was last refurbished.

TOTAL TIME, TIME SINCE NEW


(TSN)

The operating time an item has accumulated since new.

TIME TYPE INDICATOR

Indicates the type of time information supplied (e.g., TSN, TSO, TSR,
etc.)

TIME BETWEEN OVERHAULS


(TBO

The maximum time that an item is


permitted to operate between overhauls.

TIME SET TO ZERO

An indicator showing that a rework


at least to the level of refurbishment defined in the maintenance
management plan has been carried out
on the item. This indicator is used
to reset the time base against which
soft time will be measured at the
time of next removal.

WORK STATION

A minor functional area in a department of a facility. Any machine


or functional system within an area
may be classified as a work station
when it is desired to analyze its
facility requirements.
