Case Scenario 1
(5 POINTS)
1. Is patient Maria candidate for admission to the ICU? Why or why not?
For a patient to be admitted to ICU, they should be in a serious illness/ life-
threatening condition that requires a 24-hour monitoring and care and as for
patient Maria--she’s a candidate for admission to the ICU due to her stage 4
metastatic colon cancer and having shortness of breath due to her penumonia.
2. Identify her priority for ICU placement based on the guidelines found
in your book High- Acuity Nursing sixth edition at page 14.
Patient Maria is categorized in a Priority 3 status since she have stage 4
metastatic colon cancer and considered as critically ill and have unstable
condition since she’s also suffering shortness of breath due to her
pneumonia-- this can consider as lower chance of recovering from her illness
and also due to her advance directive which is the no intubation or CPR even

though the health care team can have interventions about her respiratory
management. To be able for the health care team to do save lives, they
should do every interventions they know but as for this case, the interventions
will have limitations and this would affect the recovery of patient Maria.

Case Scenario 2
(5 POINTS)
I will explain to Patient Patricio Juan that seizures is a serious concern that
may cause serious complication and can even lead to death so it should
require a immediate intervention/treatment and that often, patients with
seizure needs to be admitted to ICU since the seizure medication can impair
respiratory and hemodynamic function.
I will also explain that he will be transferred to another hospital that has level I
ICU since his seizures were already managed and I’m gonna assure him that
the health care team of that hospital will also do their very best for his fast and
sure recovery.
