I. Explain the following terms: -

1. Deforestation: cutting trees on a large scale is called deforestation.

2. Reforestation: planting trees on deforested land is called reforestation.

3. Medicinal herbs: small plants that are used to treat diseases.

II. Answer the following: -

1. Why are national parks and wildlife sanctuaries set up by the government?

Ans. National parks and wildlife sanctuaries have been set up by the government

to protect wild animals and to save the forests.

2. What is afforestation?

Ans. Afforestation is the planting of trees in an area that was not a forest earlier.

III. Answer in detail: -

1. What are the harmful effects of deforestation? (3 points)

Ans. The harmful effects of deforestation are-

a) Cutting of trees destroys the eco-system as many animals and birds are dependent

on them for their shelter and food.

b) It leads to many problems like soil erosion, landslides and floods.

c) It also causes air pollution.

2. Why do trees in thorn forests have long roots and small leaves? (4 points)

Ans. a) Thorn forests are found in dry areas.

b) In this area water is scarce. Therefore, the trees which grow here have long roots that

go deep into the ground to get water.

c) They also have small leaves so that the trees lose less water through their leaves.

d) Thus, long roots and small leaves in these trees help them to survive the dry climate.
