I. Explain the following terms:-

1. Groundwater – Rain water that seeps into the ground and gets collected there is called

groundwater.

2. Reservoir – The water stored in an artificial lake created behind the dam.

3. Irrigating – Supplying water to grow crops.

II. Answer the following:-

1. Why do the rivers that originate from the plateaus almost dry up during summer?

Ans. The rivers that originate in the plateaus get water only from rain therefore they almost

dry up during summer when there is little rain.

2. What are the different means of irrigation used in India?

Ans. The different means of irrigation used in India are wells and tube wells, canals,

sprinklers and dams.

3. How is water important for us? (2 points)

Ans. a) Water is important for us because we need water to drink, cook food, wash clothes

and do many things.

b) Farmers also need water to grow crops.

4. What is a dam? (2 points)

a) A dam is a strong wall built across a river to block the flow of water.

b) The water is stored in an artificial lake called reservoir, built behind a dam.

III. Answer in detail:- (3 points each)

2. Explain the Persian Wheel.

Ans. a) It is a wheel with buckets attached to it.

b) The wheel is turned by bullocks, buffaloes or camels, the bucket lifts water.

c) Thus, water is then diverted to the fields.

3. How are dams useful to us?

Ans. a) It generates hydroelectricity.

b) It provides water for irrigation.

c) It controls flood.
