Article Review/Critique Guidelines

Find any article less than five years old on the topic covered in this course (any chapter) that
inspires you and Write a review of an article.

Your review should show that you can recognize arguments and engage in critical thinking about
the article. Keep questions like these in mind as you read, make notes, and then write the review
or critique.
The review should include
1. Description of the Study
a. What was the purpose of the research? b) Why is the research being conducted &
why is it considered significant? c) Were the research questions, objectives or
hypothesis (es) clearly stated?(What is the specific topic of the article? What overall
purpose does it seem to have? For what purpose is it written? (Look in the
acknowledgements, reference list, and index for clues about where and how the
piece was originally published, and about the author's background and position)
2. Literature and Conceptual Framework
a. Does the literature review seem thorough & recent (within the last 5 years)?
b. Does the content of the literature review relate directly to the research problem?
c. Does the research use a theoretical or conceptual model?
d. Does the model guides the research and seem appropriate?
3. What kinds of material does the work present (e.g. primary documents or secondary
material, personal observations, literary analysis, quantitative data, biographical or historical
accounts)?
4. Method and Design
a. Describe the study design – is it appropriate?
b. How was the research conducted? (The study procedure itself) & data collected
c. Were the subject’s rights protected?
5. Sample and its techniques used
a. Unit of analysis?, sampling techniques and size
b. How representative is the sample?
c. Was there any selection bias evident in the sample selection?
6. Data Analysis (How were the data analyzed?, Do the selected statistical tests appear
appropriate? as well as Were the results significant?
7. What were the findings of the study? Does the author clearly state an explicit thesis? Does
the author have a specific point of view? Is the article “persuasive”? If so, please explain.
a. How did the authors interpret the results?
b. Was there any study limitations discussed?
8. What exactly does the work contribute and relate to the overall topic of your course and/or
assignment? What general problems and concepts in your discipline and course does it
engage with?
a. What were the implications of this study to practitioners?
b. How does the study contribute to the body of knowledge?
c. Could the study be replicated?
d. What additional questions does the study raise?
9. Your opinion about the strengths and weaknesses of the articles
