The author would like to express a very special gratitude to the God for
giving me blessing, health and grace so that the author can finish this work on
time. I do realize that without his help, I won’t be able to complete this writing III
final task entitled “Teaching Speaking Skill by Using TikTok Application”. The
author also would like to deliver my gratitude to Miss Rahma as the lecture for
always helping and giving me support and useful knowledge so that the author
can complete the task right in the calculated time.

The author put a big hope that the task can be useful and hopefully, it can
enhance the knowledge of the readers as well. The author realizes that this task
still far from faultless so, the author wholeheartedly opens criticisms and

INTRODUCTION

Speaking is one of the most important skills in English which requires to be


mastered by English learners. Someone who is considered to have a good
speaking skill is when they have ability to create words that are easy to be
comprehended by hearers. According to Brown and Yule (2020), the skill that the
learners will be assessed frequently in real-life circumstances is speaking skill.
Speaking is essential in English as it is an action used to transfer meaning with
others. Speaking is a natural action thus, we utilize it everywhere and anytime and
speaking has turned into our regular activities. The moment we speak, we make an
interaction and utilize the language to convey our thoughts, ideas, feelings, and
opinions. We also give and receive information through speaking. Dionar and
Adnan (2018) stated that the primary activity of language learning is speaking.
There is a theory that achievement in language learning is revealed by achieving
acquisition in speaking. Dionar and Adnan (2018) also said that the most
important skill for the efficiency of communication is speaking. From what
Dionar and Adnan have reported, it can be concluded that communication will not
occur if there is no speech at all.

As the explanation above, speaking is a natural action which we utilize it every


day. Yet speaking in foreign or second language will be different, and it has never
been easy for some people. Most of English learners agree that they often face
some difficulties in learning English as the target language, especially for
speaking. They thought that the hardest skill in English is speaking. Abdullah
(2017) claimed that learning speaking is harder than learning to comprehend the
target language. In another word, Leong and Ahmadi (2017) stated that the less
learners train their speaking skill, the less likely the learners to master the skill.
Since the learners do not master the language, they might be nervous to speak in
the target language. Pratiwi (2021) said that there are six foremost points need to
be considered to become fluent and brave in speaking the target language; they
have confidence, fluency & accuracy, finding the right words, showing where we

are going, keeping the listeners interested, and sounding natural. In some cases,
they understand the target language, but when it comes to communicate it, almost
all students prefer to keep quiet instead of being active and expressing their
thoughts or ideas orally. This happens because they lack of vocabulary, they lack
of confidence, they are unmotivated, they fear of being judged by others, they are
afraid of making mistake, they feel shy to speak up, they need much time to
express their ideas in English, and sometimes they do not even know how to
communicate it in the target language. Therefore, to cope with these difficulties,
the teachers need to apply strategies in teaching speaking skill.

Strategies are designed methods and actions. Strategies are known as steps,
actions, or even tactics that we used to accomplish our goals. In learning
language, strategies are very important because it will facilitate us in
comprehending the language. According to Oxford (1990:8).”Strategies are
specific actions taken by the learner to make learning easier, faster, more
enjoyable, more self-directed, more effective, and more transferrable to new
situations”. By having strategies, we are expected to have a control of learning
process, be able to enhance learning comprehension and to determine the success
of learning language. Stone and Morris in Isaac (2010) stated that teaching
strategies are prevalent plans in lesson that include formation, instructional
purpose, and broad outline of targeted strategies which it is essential to enforce
the strategies. There are some alternative ways in teaching speaking skill, for
instance by using games, quizzes, group discussion, brainstorming, role-play,
debate, storytelling, and the most widely teaching strategy used by the learners is
based on technology. Technology can be in several forms. It could be in the form
of applications, games, online videos, webs, virtual reality, social media and so
on. In terms of online videos, there are so many learning English videos that we
could find on the internet. One of the commonly known by millennials is TikTok
application.

Aji (2018) wrote that TikTok is defined as one of Chinese social media and
video platforms which was launched in September 2016. By using this

application, the users can make their own videos with their own creativity. They
can also use the viral songs in their video to make it viral. TikTok is not only a
media for entertainment, motivation, infotainment, etc. but it is also a media for
education, especially for English learning. We can realize in this platform where
teachers often take benefits from it to convey their knowledge. English can be
learnt inside and outside of the classroom and English learners can also learn the
target language in fun ways. TikTok also has many features such as duet
challenge, voice feature, switch video, communicate via network, etc. A lot of
content creators provide English language learning, for example speaking,
pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and so forth.

Nevertheless, there are not so many teachers yet who use TikTok as a strategy
for learning English in the classroom, especially for teaching speaking skill.
TikTok could be an effective and efficient strategy for teaching speaking as the
teacher can share some important points creatively and briefly which will be
easier for students to get the points shared by the teacher. TikTok could be fun for
the learners as well as it requires them to be more creative and since there are so
many people who have known this application and being active users, especially
by generation Z, TikTok application can be used for teaching speaking skill in
English classroom. Based on the explanation above, it can be concluded that
teaching speaking skill by using TikTok application is important to be discussed
further.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

A. Teaching Speaking
Speaking is one of the basic skills in English which is essential to be mastered
by English learners because its function for communication. Therefore, teaching
speaking is an activity that requires more attention by English teacher. According
to Fashuri (2019), teaching speaking is the act of directing the students to be able
to speak and show any communication include in the discussion to another
person. Fals (2019) also stated that teaching speaking is obliged to make the
learners improve their achievement in verbal interaction efficiently. On the other
hand, Baha Dorkar and Omiduar (2014) reported that teaching speaking is:

1. Create the English speech sounds and sound pattern.


2. Use word and sentence stress, intonation pattern and the rhythm of the target
language.
3. Choice suitable words and sentences agreeing to the proper social setting
audience, situation, and subject material.
4. Arrange their opinions in a logical and meaning sequence.
5. Use language as a way of showing judgements and values.
6. Use the language confidently and rapidly and with few unusual silences, named
as fluency.

B. TikTok Application
TikTok is currently one of the most applications with wide range of users. In
TikTok, the contents are not only for entertaining, but it is also for educating. The
learners can use this application as it already provides many English videos for
learning. Yusuf (2019) in (Mahnun 2019) said that TikTok application can be use
on mobile devices both on Android and IOS. Febliyansyah (2022) wrote that

TikTok is one of the social networks which is used as a learning setting because
of its the large users base, rich content, and wide-ranging features. Yang (2020)
also mentioned that TikTok is an application which provides the users to record
video where they can use special filter and songs that is currently go viral.

Syah (2020) stated that several interactive events for students and teachers via
short videos can be assured by TikTok. The video, engagements digital
technology and a colourful figure to attach multifaceted logical concepts to
everyday lifetime, guarantee by science teachers. Connections to everyday life
scores are livelier, and educational materials are being formed more animatedly
(Syah, 2020). Febliyansyah (2022) wrote that English teacher or some English
media innovatively can be provided by TikTok and in their platform, short videos
in English can be required by some English media. In the meantime, TikTok can
be used by students to make their own digital verbal presentations in English.
Comments can also be left by teachers or TikTok other users, letting their students
develop their English-speakng skill through comments, (Febliyansyah, 2022).

Hadi and Indriani (2020) claimed that there are several arrangements used by
the teachers before using TikTok application:

A. Teacher creates four videos. One video is about explanation for the material
and

the three videos left are about conversation.

B. The videos are shared to the students.

C. Students watch and acquire the knowledge about the material.

D. The video that contains about the explanation of the material is concluded by
the

teacher.

E. Students are requested to create video with the three videos that has been
created

by the teacher containing conversation about the material by using duet
challenge

feature to view students’ speaking skill.

F. The result of the students’ videos is watched and assessed by the teacher.

DISCUSSION

In Indonesia, English is a foreign language, unlike Malaysia and Singapore


where English has status as a second language. Although English here is a foreign
language, but because the function of English itself as an international language,
makes people learn this language, whether it is an obligation (study in school) or
not. The more people realize of the importance of communicating among people
in the world, the more people will have the urge to learn English. However,
learning English will not be easy, especially for those who learn English as a
foreign language.

English has four skills that are reading, listening, writing, and speaking.
Speaking and writing are known as productive skills in English which require
learners to produce the language, not just receiving and understanding the
language (Reading and Listening). The diversity among speaking and writing as
productive skills is the result of it. The result of writing is in the form of written
text, meanwhile speaking is in the spoken language.

Spoken language is produced when the learners make sounds and create words
that can be understood by others. It allows learners to make an interaction and
communicate among people. Since speaking is obliged the learners to produce the
language, it becomes an activity that will be quite hard to carry out by the learners
even tough in speaking, the learners do not have to really pay attention to the
grammar. In speaking, the learners can speak spontaneously and express anything
in their mind on the condition that the listeners get the ideas of what they are
speaking about. Nevertheless, not every learner has a courage to speak and

express their thoughts, opinions, or ideas in English. This happens because they
feel shy and often fear of being judged by others, they lack of vocabulary, they are
unmotivated, they are afraid of making mistakes, they less confidence, they do not
have idea about how to structure the words into some sentences in English, they
need much time to think in English, and the last, they think that they are not
capable of speaking in English as they thought that they must speak as fluent and
as good as native speakers.

Since there are some difficulties often faced by the learners in speaking
English, the teacher needs to apply some strategies in the classroom. Several
strategies which are quite general as it is often used are role-play, conversation,
storytelling, group discussion, debate, presentation and the last, strategies that can
be accessed by using technology. Technology is a tool that the learners can use it,
not just to access entertainment, infotainment, but it also can be used for
information if the learners use it well and really take benefits from the technology.
In fact, technology does not just facilitate learners in communication with other
people, but it also facilitates them in receiving new information. The formation of
the technology can be seen in several forms such as, the learners can take benefits
to learn English, especially in learning speaking, by using YouTube video, social
media, webs, virtual reality, and applications. One of applications which
commonly used by generation Z is TikTok applications.

TikTok application is a video platform where the users can enjoy some online
videos such as about celebrity, world information, fashion, motivation, habit,
inspiration, sport, food, education and so forth. Since TikTok allows the users to
learn, to acquire new knowledge, to practice and so on, the use of TikTok in
teaching English, especially speaking can be considered. There are already some
English learning videos in TikTok that can be accessed and watched by English
learners such as, videos where the creators discuss about how to pronoun some
English words, then they sometimes also talk about common mistakes found in
English sentence, they also teach about grammar, vocabulary, and they also allow
students to practice their speaking by providing them videos where they can

switch it, then let them give a comment, a suggestion or anything that allows them
to speak. They can also make a duet if the content creators provide video which is
in the form of conversation. Not just by using videos from the content creators
actually, the learners can also create their own videos. They can discuss about
themselves, about their daily life, their opinion about some things, about English
subject that they are currently studying, or about anything, as long as they convey
it in English. Nevertheless, there are not so many English teachers who apply
TikTok application for teaching speaking skill in the classroom even tough,
TikTok could be an effective, efficient, and creative strategy.

As the explanation above, English teachers do not often use TikTok as learning
strategy for teaching speaking skill. However, it does not mean that there is no
teacher who has applied this in the classroom at all. Febliyansyah, for example in
his research at English department students of UIN Fatmawati Sukarno Bengkulu
(2022) stated that there are some issues faced by learners in speaking even tough
speaking is a natural action of human. First, he stated that learners have anxiety.
Second, he wrote that the learners do not have confidence. Third, learners are
often confused in arranging the words and it leads to less confidence. Fourth,
leaners do not have much interest in learning English, especially speaking. Fifth,
many of the learners are hesitate to speak up and it causes less participation. Due
to all the problems found in the learners, the researcher found a learning strategy
for improving confidence and concept mastery of the learners is by using TikTok
Application. The researcher used TikTok with Project Based Learning (PBL)
method. TikTok were used because it can easily downloaded by learners, it is an
innovative media, and since TikTok has many features so it can easily attach
learners’ attention and interest that will lead them to improve their communication
skill by TikTok’ features. The researchers found the result that TikTok with PBL
has effect on leaners’ speaking skill.

Marleni, et al. (2021) has also done a research about using TikTok to improve
students’ speaking skill at the second semester of English Language and
Education Department of Universitas Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai. The

researchers found that learners have difficulty in Vocabulary, they prefer to
remain silent, they need more time to think about what they are going to say, and
most of them are passive to express and response to the topic given by the teacher.
Thus, to cope with those problems, the researchers applied an interesting and
suitable media that is TikTok application as it will give different atmosphere due
to its features of TikTok. From this research shows that TikTok influences
students’ improvement in speaking skill.

Except those researchers above, Yolanda (2021) has carried out experimental
research about the effect of using TikTok towards students’ speaking skill at the
eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 2 Kuok as well. The researcher found the same
cases as Marleni, et al. First, students have difficulty in Vocabulary. Second, they
prefer to remain silent. Third, they need more time to think about what they are
going to say. And fourth, most of them are passive to express and response to the
topic given by the teacher. The researcher shows that TikTok application can be
applied in teaching and learning speaking to cope with these difficulties as TikTok
has many advantages. The features of TikTok have is one of the advantages of this
application. Then, TikTok also provides English online videos such as about
grammar, pronunciation, speaking, vocabulary, and so on. TikTok can be an
effective and strategy as well because the teacher can share the material creatively
and briefly that will lead to easier understanding for the students. Not only that,
using TikTok is also fun since if the students ask to create a video, they are freely
to make the videos with their imagination and with their own creativity. In here,
the teacher gives them freedom to do their assignment. That is why, the result of
this research is there is an effect of applying TikTok application in teaching and
learning process towards students’ speaking skill.

Since the result of all the references that the author has read found that TikTok
can improve and has an effect on students speaking skill, it can be concluded that
teaching speaking by using TikTok application can be implemented in the
classroom due its functions, advantages, and positive impacts on students’
speaking skill. TikTok can be an effective, efficient, and creative media which can

be used both for the teacher and the students in the classroom as well. TikTok also
becomes one of the applications with wide range of users in Indonesia and almost
all of people know, have downloaded, being active users, and even being content
creators of TikTok application. Although if there are some students who have not
use this application, they can get the application easily. Thus, implementing this
application in the classroom will not take much cost. With a lot of advantages of
TikTok application, the teacher can teach students’ speaking skill by using
TikTok Application in the classroom.

CONCLUSION

Speaking is a productive skill along with writing which the learners must
produce the language, not just receiving and understanding the language. Another
term of speaking is called as spoken language. Spoken language is produced when
the learners make sounds and create words that can be understood by others. It
allows learners to make an interaction and communicate among people. Since
speaking is obliged the learners to produce the language, it becomes an activity
that will be quite hard to carry out by the learners. There are some difficulties
often faced by English learners such as, they lack of vocabulary, they are
unmotivated, they are afraid of making mistakes, they less confidence, and so
forth.
Thus, the teacher should find an alternative, interactive and creative media to
cope these problems. One of media that can be implemented by the teacher in the
classroom is based on technology. Technology could be in several forms such as
social media, webs, YouTube, applications, and so on. One of commonly known
and have many users is TikTok application. TikTok application is online videos
that provide not only for entertainment, but also education with so many features
for instance, duet challenge, switch video, etc. In TikTok, there are already
content creators who provide English learning videos such as speaking,
pronunciation, vocabulary and many more. Turns out, with all those advantages of
TikTok, the teacher can implement this application in the classroom to teach
speaking skill.
More than three researchers have conducted the use of TikTok application in
teaching speaking. All the research show that TikTok has an effect and could be
an effective strategy to improve students’ speaking skill. They agree that TikTok
have many advantages as the final grade of the students shows positive increase.
Therefore, the teacher can use TikTok application as the strategy in enhancing
students’ speaking skill. Briefly, teaching speaking skill by using TikTok
application can be considered by the teacher to be implemented in the classroom.
