Director CIDiER 2021

Mayken Espinoza-Andaluz received his bachelor’s degree in electronic and


telecommunication engineering in 2007 from Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral
(ESPOL). While his bachelor’s degree, he specialized in renewable energy and hydrogen
technology at Fachhochschule Stralsund, University of Applied Sciences in Germany.
Later he obtained a master’s degree in physics teaching at ESPOL. After that, he studied
at Lund University, Department of Energy Sciences, to get his Ph.D. in Heat Transfer in
2017. Currently, he is a full professor at Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL)
and is co-supervisor of Ph.D. students in Heat Transfer and Energy Systems at Lund
University, too. Mayken’s research concerns different topics like Renewable Energy, Fuel
Cells, PEMFCs and SOFCs, Physical and Chemical phenomena, Energy efficiency, the
Lattice Boltzmann method, computational modeling. He has been a reviewer in several
journals such as the International Journal of Energy Research, International Journal of
Hydrogen Energy, Computers and Mathematics with Applications, among others.

Jordy Santana-Villamar received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from


Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL) in 2020, obtaining a diploma of
distinction in research. He was a teaching assistant for 4 semesters during his student
stage on subjects such as calculus, electromagnetics physics, and statistics. Then, he got
a position as assistant research for 4 semesters more until graduation. Currently, he is a
junior researcher at the Center of Renewable and Alternative Energy of the ESPOL. His
research interest is involved in electrochemical tests to evaluate the performance in fuel
cells and redox flow batteries applying EIS technique, sweep current, linear, and circular
sweep voltammetry. Also, expanded graphite-resin composite materials development
with secondary fillers for bipolar plates, and lastly in modeling on transport phenomena.
As a result, he has published 6 scientific papers where 3 of them are placed in quartile
1, high impact. Furthermore, he has participated in congresses, conferences, and
meetings to spread the work done. Recently at the 7th International Conference on
Renewable Energy and Development (ICRED), Fukuoka, Japan.

Ángel Encalada-Dávila received his bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics Engineering in


2020 from Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL), Guayaquil, Ecuador.
Currently, he works as a Software Engineer at an important Ecuadorian ATM company,
having Banco del Pacifico as one of its clients, the second-biggest bank in Ecuador. He
also collaborates as an External Researcher (Data Analyst) at Control, Modeling,
Identification, and Applications Research Group (CoDAlab) from Universitat Politècnica
de Catalunya (UPC), Barcelona, Spain. His research interests include Structural Health
Monitoring (SHM), and Fault Prognosis applied to Wind Turbines; and Computer
Modeling (CM) applied to Fuel Cells (FC). In addition, Mr. Encalada is the author and co-
author of several scientific articles published in well-known scientific journals like
Sensors, Energies, and Processes from MDPI. Finally, his passion for research and
academy has taken him to organize CIDiER 2021, an Iberoamerican event that promises
excellence.

Yolanda Vidal received her bachelor’s in Mathematics in 1999 and Ph.D. in Applied
Mathematics in 2005 from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Barcelona, Spain.
She has worked in the Department of Mathematics and the Barcelona East School of
Engineering (EEBE) at the UPC since 2001. She is an associate professor of the Research
Group Control, Modeling, Identification and Applications (CoDAlab). Her research
interests include structural health monitoring (SHM), condition monitoring (CM), and
fault diagnosis (FD), with an emphasis on their specific application to wind turbines.
Furthermore, Yolanda Vidal is a member of the IEEE and a member of the editorial board
of international journals such as Mathematics, Sensors, Energies, Frontiers in Built
Environment, and Frontiers in Energy Research. She is the author of 45 journal articles,
17 competitive projects, 15 book chapters, 7 books, 1 invention patent, 1 collaboration
contract with a company, and more than 100 international speeches.

Luciano Castillo received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the State University
of New York in 1997. He holds a position as Kenninger Professor of Renewable Energy
and Power Systems at Purdue University located in Indiana, United States (USA). With
more than 100 published scientific articles and 13 book chapters on topics such as
turbulence, wind energy, engineering education, etc., endorse the great research
background of the Ph.D. Luciano Castillo. In addition, Prof. Castillo has received
numerous awards for his career and projects, among which are: NASA Summer Faculty
Fellowship in 2001 and 2002 and the ASME Robert T. Knapp Award for the best paper in
2002. He has given around 10 keynote speeches only in the wind energy field, including
conferences at LACCEI and the University of Houston. He has won a total of 27 contracts
and grants for projects on inclusion and wind energy issues.

Juan Gómez Romero is currently an associate professor at the Computer Science and
Artificial Intelligence Department from The University of Granada. In addition, he works
as a principal researcher at SAIL (Sustainable Artificial Intelligence Laboratory), founded
in January 2020. He has a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from The University of
Granada. After that, he developed his post-doctoral studies at the University Carlos III
of Madrid, where he was a researcher at GIIA (Applied Artificial Intelligence Group). In
addition, Prof. Romero has participated in more than 20 research projects, including
European projects like OPKIT, ePOOLICE, and Energy IN TIME. Finally, he has published
more than 60 articles during his academic path, including specialized journals and
conferences, which endorses his knowledge in artificial intelligence, energy, and
information fusion.

Daniela Benites is a naval engineer with a master's degree in Offshore Engineering at


the University of Newcastle. From 2014 to 2016, she was a professor in the Naval
Engineering program from Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL). Currently,
she is a Ph.D. candidate at University College London (UCL), United Kingdom. His
research interest is focused on the interaction of multiple wave energy converters
operating under different settings. In addition, she is co-founder and co-organizer of the
UCL OpenFOAM Workshop. It is a free workshop intended for students with strong
interests in learning and improving their skills using Computer Fluid Dynamics.
Furthermore, other research interests are related to structural analysis and fluid-
structure interaction of offshore facilities and crafts.
