Engagement Surveys
Each day, your company sends out a confidential engagement survey to each of its 500 employees and receives a 15%
response rate. One question asks for suggestions about what the company can improve. At the end of the year, HR
compiles the survey results and presents them to the Senior Leadership Team, which then decides on some action plans
to address negative trends and some action plans to follow up on staff suggestions. Since widespread knowledge about
negative trends may harm morale, none of the action plans are shared with staff.
As an HR generalist, what do you recommend to improve the company's engagement survey process?
(Select all acceptable answers.)
● The company should not send an engagement survey every day because more employees are likely
to respond if they receive fewer surveys.
● The decision-making process should include each employee at every step to make sure that
everyone completely agrees with the action plans.
● Action plans related to staff suggestions should be shared with all staff so they know that their
responses led to positive changes.
● The surveys should not be confidential so each response can be connected to an employee and
shared throughout the company.
● HR should present survey results to the Senior Leadership Team more frequently to address
negative trends before they become serious problems.
Sharing Information
Working in HR, you conduct basic phone screens with selected job applicants to confirm their continued interest in the
position and availability for interviews. After testing and interviews, a hiring team cannot decide between 2 applicants
that you screened, Janna Parvik and Kyril Sims. They invite you to a meeting and ask you to share anything you learned
during the phone screens that can help them decide which applicant to hire.
What statements are appropriate for you to say?
(Select all acceptable answers.)
● “Kyril was rude and kept interrupting as I was trying to tell him basic information about the selection process and the
job.”
● “Janna was difficult to schedule for interviews because she is also being interviewed by one of our competitors and
seemed to prefer them.”
● “Janna sounded young so I'm worried that she might get pregnant in the next year or two and then we'd be
short-staffed again.”
● “Kyril told me that the job interested him because he thought that he could quickly become a manager because of his
skills.”
● “Kyril is a Bulgarian citizen and we need to think about our diversity hiring goals since we already employ a lot of
Eastern Europeans like him.”
● “Janna has several religious holidays that she will need to take in addition to the national ones that we observe.”
Harassment
As an HR generalist, you are often approached by employees with salary complaints. The company’s policy is that
employees should first talk to their direct manager and then contact HR if needed.
After telling one employee with a salary question about the policy, she says that she generally avoids talking to her
manager because he always comments on her clothes and perfume when they're alone, which makes her uncomfortable.
She shares that other women he manages have similar stories. She asks you to keep this confidential between you and
her because she doesn't want to put her career at risk.
What do you say to her?
(Select all acceptable answers.)
● “Since you don’t want to raise this as a problem, let’s forget it and focus on your salary question instead.”
● “I'll recommend that he immediately and thoroughly read our zero tolerance, anti-harassment policies.”
● “I'll need to discuss this with my manager who will maintain confidentiality and know the appropriate steps to take.”
● “Please tell me the other women's names so I can do some investigation to find out how big this problem is.”
● “We have policies to protect you from retaliation, maintain your confidentiality, and investigate your claims.”
HRIS
You are an HR Generalist at a startup company that will soon recruit and hire 30 new employees who, depending on their roles,
will receive different hourly pay rates and benefits packages. To handle the expansion, the COO has decided to buy a Human
Resource Information Software (HRIS) package and assigns you to come up with a list of 4 features that the package must
have for core HR functionality and 4 extra features that would be nice to have.
For each HRIS feature listed in below, write “must have” or “nice to have” and the reason for your answear:
● Time and Attendance
● Performance Reviews
● Mobile Phone App
● Applicant Tracking and Recruiting
● Employee Information Database
● Email Integration
● Compensation & Benefits
● Cloud-Based Software
● Peer Reviews
● Training tracking
