COURSE SYLLABUS

Course Title: Current Trends in Teaching Science

Course No. Sci Educ 305

Course Description: The course provides an in-depth examination and analysis of literature and research in science education. It examines
theoretical foundations of research studies in science education, discusses methodologies of research, critique research, and examines trends in
emerging science education research. This includes presentations as well as opportunities for graduate students to explore research ideas with
colleagues within the class.

Course Objectives: At the end of the course, the students will be able to:

1. Explore and think about larger trends in the teaching of science specific to science education; some of them are trends in education
more generally
2. Examine the forces that teachers in the field are subject to: a sort of free body diagram of science teachers’ professional lives.
3. Draw on a wide variety of social theory, history, personal reflection, and policy analysis in science education

Course Format: The format of this course will include opportunities to learn and apply the course objectives through:

1. Individual presentation of their assigned topics/research


2. Lectures and discussions of ideas based on the topics discussed
3. Presentation of concept paper on assigned topics
4. Examinations

Course Requirements: a. Active Participation: 10%

b. Attendance : 10 %

c. Oral and Written Presentation : 35 %

d. Requirements/Demonstration : 15 %

e. Final Examination : 30 %
