Foreword by the Swiss Ambassador 3
Useful addresses 94
Dear reader,
Never has mankind had as easy and instant access to a vast and diverse amount of information as
today. The ever increasing possibilities of information and telecommunication technology at more and
more affordable prices offer new opportunities that many people could not have dreamt of not so long
ago. But while we can connect to almost any source of information within the split of a second in the
palm of our hands, the enormous offer of electronic and printed (yes, they still exist, too!) publications
makes it at times difficult to discern the appropriate and accurate information that exactly meets our
needs.
I am therefore very happy to present you the latest edition of this handbook on Swiss-Indian Trade and
Investment Relations, which gives you a concise, but at the same time comprehensive overview of the
bilateral economic ties between Switzerland and India. The directory at hand is meant to serve as a
guide to both Swiss and Indian business actors with interest in the Indo-Swiss economic ties. Indeed,
the number of Swiss companies active in India has considerably increased in the last few years with
more than 200 joint ventures, subsidiaries, branches and liaison offices. And so has the number of
Swiss companies presented in this brochure since its last publication in 2010.
I’m pleased to note that despite numerous global economic challenges and crises in recent years
both trade and investment between our two countries have been steadily on the rise and have thus
strengthened our relations. I am also particularly pleased about the fact that more and more Indian
companies are discovering Switzerland as a favourable investment location that fits perfectly well into
their international expansion plans. So far more than 100 Indian companies have made investments
and taken advantage of Switzerland as an ideal gateway for the European market.
Many more opportunities lie ahead for Swiss and Indian companies to successfully do business. And
I can assure you that the Network Switzerland in India, as we call it, comprising of the Embassy,
the Consulates General in Mumbai and Bangalore, the Swiss Business Hub and Swissnex (which
promotes cooperation in science, research and higher education) as well as our Honorary Consuls
in Kolkata and Chennai, is committed to further broaden and enhance the already excellent bilateral
economic relations and to help paving the way for fruitful Swiss-Indian business collaborations.
I hope that reading this business directory will prove useful to you and contribute to your business
success (and yes, this booklet obviously exists in an electronic version, too).

Switzerland’s share in Indian import is very high due to the fact that it is the largest supplier of precious metals to the Indian market. Its share
comes down to 0.51% if the values of gold and silver are deducted from the overall import from Switzerland. Exports and imports of gold from
and to Switzerland do not show up in Swiss trade statistics.
There are various bilateral agreements between Switzerland and India such as the Avoidance of Double Taxation,
the Promotion and Protection of Investments, Cooperation in Science and Technology, Intellectual Property
and Social Security etc., that provide a sound framework for promoting mutually beneficial business activities.
Currently, Switzerland, together with the other EFTA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) and India are
negotiating a broad-based agreement on trade and investment. Such a free trade agreement is designed to
improve mutual market access and eliminate trade barriers. Switzerland and India also institutionalised different
fora such as the Joint Economic Commission and the Financial Dialogue with the aim to further strengthen their
trade and economic ties.
The global economy has been going through a difficult period since 2008. While most of the advanced
economies are still struggling to recover, many of the emerging economies have shown resilience and recorded
comparatively good growth. India achieved an average annual GDP growth of nearly 7.6 percent during 2010-
2012, but is estimated to have grown a mere 5 percent in fiscal year 2012-13. The slowdown is attributed to
internal as well as external factors. Internally, there has been a downfall in capital investment due to high interest
rates and policy paralysis. Factors, such as high fiscal deficit and rising current account deficit have had an
adverse impact. Nevertheless, driven by a strong domestic market, India continues to present promising growth
opportunities which make the Indian market an attractive business location for both existing companies as well
as new entrants. India remains an important investment destination and trading partner for the Swiss economy.
Swiss companies have been actively providing cutting edge technologies and high-tech products to various
industrial sectors. In the services sector, too, Switzerland’s expertise and knowledge in financial services, tourism
and engineering have contributed to create many mutually beneficial business ventures. The fact that both
Switzerland and India are taking advantage of this is reflected in the rising volume of the bilateral trade in goods
and services, expanding number of Swiss companies investing in India as well as Indian companies increasingly
setting up their units in Switzerland.
Trade between the two countries has grown significantly in the last ten years, more than tripling from Swiss
Francs 1.24 billion in 2003 to more than 4.0 billion in 2012. Of late, Indian exports to Switzerland have gained
momentum.
The following graph depicts the evolution of the Swiss-Indian trade between 2003 and 2012.
With regard to direct investments, Switzerland has been actively involved in India for many decades and remains
amongst the top foreign investors in India. As per the cumulative foreign direct investment inflows data available
for April 2000-December 2012, Switzerland is the 11th largest foreign investor, investing some US$ 2.28 billion
(see below table). However, the actual figure is expected to be much higher as a large part of foreign direct
investments to India, including investment from Switzerland, is routed through other countries and therefore not
reflected in this figure.
2
Total figure does not include inflows under NRI schemes of Reserve Bank of India, reinvested earnings and other capital flows.
Swiss companies present in India have successfully taken advantage of business opportunities to grow within an
overall promising Indian market environment. Numerous Swiss companies have established new manufacturing
plants in order to mitigate the consequences of the strong Swiss franc and high import duty in the value conscious
Indian market. However, obstacles to doing business in India such as excessive bureaucracy, red tape, complex
tax system, slow judicial system, insufficient IPR enforcement, rigid labour laws and inadequate infrastructure
remain of major concern. The political situation is generally considered as stable, but due to lack of political
willingness and fragile coalition politics, the economic reform process has drastically slowed down during recent
years.
As a consequence of sluggish economic reforms and the fast increasing internationalization of Corporate India,
India’s outbound investments continue to grow. In 2012-13, Corporate India made outbound investments to the
amount of USD 10.2 billion as compared to USD 8.8 billion in 2011-123. Switzerland regularly ranks among the
top five European investment destinations4. Many Indian companies have realised the importance of Switzerland
as a gateway to Europe, due to competitive advantages it offers to foreign investors. Key factors that make
Switzerland attractive for Indian investors are its geo-strategic location in the centre of Europe, political and
economic stability, modern infrastructure, strong financial centre, liberal labour market, strong industry and
technology clusters, transaction security and a moderate tax burden. The Global Competitiveness Index Report
2012-13 has ranked Switzerland as the world’s most competitive economy for the fourth consecutive year,
confirming once again the attractiveness of the Swiss business and investment climate. Despite its modest size,
Switzerland continues to be one of the most attractive investment destinations – which is supported by the fact
that more than 1000 foreign companies steer their global or European business activities from Switzerland. The
country has also attracted several large Indian investments, such as Tata (with several subsidiaries), Mahindra
& Mahindra, Dr. Reddy, Infosys, Wipro, HCL, Wockhardt and Glenmark among others. Main investments come
from the life science and ICT sector.
Another area where both countries have established strong ties is tourism: Tourist arrivals from India have
registered a 100 per cent growth in the past five years and India has become an important market for Swiss
tourism with 474,882 overnights in 2012.
Both Switzerland and India attach high importance to their efforts for further strengthening bilateral trade and
investment, as these ties are a strong pillar of the overall bilateral relations between the two countries. The
future looks promising and especially sectors such as clean technology, life sciences, engineering, medtech,
financial services, construction materials and equipment, consumer goods, railways and logistics offer plenty
of opportunities for Swiss companies. With increasing interactions between business communities of the two
countries, the Swiss-Indian trade and economic relationship is bound to become stronger.
3
The figures only include investments by way of equity and loans and do not take into account guarantees issued.
4
RBI OFDI figures do not take into account that a majority of investments are routed via other jurisdictions for tax structuring purposes
The Embassy conducted a brief analysis of these businesses in the first quarter of 2013. Of the 200 companies
approached, the Embassy received responses from 156 companies - which have been listed in this directory.
It is noteworthy to mention that most of the existing businesses have successfully expanded their operations in
India in spite of the subdued global economic conditions and only a few companies have ceased their operations.
Note: Services include consultancy, finance, tourism, logistics; chemical and pharma include biotech; instruments include
medical devices, textiles include machinery, intermediates and final products; information technology includes BPO;
construction includes cement, infrastructure; consumer goods include watches.
In other sectors like power and food processing only a few Swiss players are currently present. But important
investors such as ABB and Nestle have a strong position in the Indian market. Of late, a growing interest from
Swiss companies in sectors such as IT, printing & packaging as well as automotive components has increasingly
translated into new investments.
The geographical distribution of Swiss companies in India shows that the Western region (mainly Mumbai
and Pune) has attracted the highest number of investments, followed by NCR region (Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida) and
the Southern region (Bangalore and Chennai).

An interesting point to note is that apart from new investments numerous Swiss companies with existing presence
in India have expanded their operations and workforce (overall more than 60’000 staff) over the last three years.
As India remains amongst the major emerging economies in the world, there is significant scope not only for new
investments from Swiss companies without existing India presence but also with respect to add-on investments
from Swiss companies with existing India operations.
Switzerland Global Enterprise (formerly Osec) was founded as a non-profit association in 1927 and was
commissioned by the Swiss government (State Secretariat for Economic Affairs) with the official performance
mandate for the promotion of exports, imports and investments.
Switzerland Global Enterprise informs, advises and guides SMEs from Switzerland and Liechtenstein in their
international business ventures and helps export-oriented SMEs to develop new potential for their international
business. As a centre of excellence for internationalization it aims at fostering exports by linking entrepreneurs,
companies, experts and private as well as public organizations around the world.
Apart from export promotion, Switzerland Global Enterprise has also been responsible for promoting Switzerland
as a business location abroad (since 2008) and aims at strengthening Switzerland’s position as an economic
hub.
Switzerland Global Enterprise runs 19 Swiss Business Hubs abroad, most of which are incubated in Switzerland’s
diplomatic representations. The Swiss Business Hubs are the backbone of Switzerland Global Enterprise’s
presence abroad. They provide guidance to Swiss exporters in key markets and promote Switzerland as a
business location abroad. In India, the SBHI was established in 2001 and has its headquarters in Mumbai
(under the umbrella of the Consulate General of Switzerland) with a chapter in New Delhi (within the Embassy of
Switzerland) and Bangalore (within the Consulate General of Switzerland).
Export promotion
The SBHI’s export promotion mission is to support Swiss and Liechtenstein based SMEs in their efforts to enter
or extend their presence in the Indian market - by providing free information and basic consulting services as well
as tailor-made advice through in-house experts or third party consultants. Detailed consulting services relating to
strategy and implementation are chargeable and rendered by the SBHI in close collaboration with its network of
experts based on Switzerland Global Enterprise’s modular “Export Step by Step” consultancy concept. The SBHI
on a regular basis holds SME-consultancy meetings at Switzerland Global Enterprise and renders free basic
consulting services to more than 100 SMEs per year.

The SBHI promotes Switzerland as a business location and facilitates investments of Indian companies with
international focus by providing free advisory services to Indian investors who are in the process of considering
investments in Europe in general or Switzerland in particular. A dedicated team of experienced in-house experts
is the first point of contact for Indian companies wishing to take concrete steps towards investing in Switzerland.
The SBHI offers networking platforms such as investor conferences, awareness events, CEO round tables as well
as sector specific networking platforms. In this capacity, the SBHI closely collaborates with cantonal and regional
economic development agencies, assesses investment projects and connects prospective investors with relevant
stakeholders and experts in Switzerland. In addition, the SBHI also organises tailor-made fact-finding missions
to Switzerland and offers one-to-one management meetings between Indian investors and knowledge partners,
experts and cantonal/regional representatives. The SBHI’s location and investment promotion program aims at
simplifying the process of procuring information regarding Switzerland’s competitive advantages and provides
