Bihar: As per the data available, the state recorded ‘severe’ AQI for 19 days between
December 1 and December 20 (except on December 6)
The increasing number of vehicles on road, with no regular check on emissions, is one
of the major factors for poor AQI, said Dr Ravindra Kumar, a private pulmonologist on
Patna’s Boring-Patliputra Road.

According to BSPCB chairman Ashok Ghosh: The air quality has dipped due to a
decline in temperature and low wind speed. During the winter transition, a thermal
inversion occurs in which suspended pollutant particles rise with the warmer air.
Apart from this, the geographical location of the state is also responsible for poor air
quality,”
Pollution experts said that unfavourable weather conditions are responsible for
worsening AQI in the state.

More than 65% of India's electricity generation capacity comes from thermal
power plants, with 85% of the country's thermal power generation being
coal-based. The ten biggest thermal power stations operating in India are all
coal-fired, with five of them owned and operated by state-run National
Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC).
