2.1. INTRODUCTION
The D3 is a fully automated analyzer performing hematological analysis of whole blood.
The human blood venous sample should be collected in an EDTA K3 (Ethylene Diamine Tetracetic Acid, tri
potassic) tube in sufficient quantity. The 3 Part Differential (Lymphocyte, Mid Cells, Granulocytes) results
are available for six hours after the blood draw. The use of EDTA K2 is not recommended. The sample must
be correctly homogenized before analysis.
The volume of blood must be in correct proportion to the quantity of anticoagulant otherwise
the dilution will affect the result.
WBC DILUTION :

Syringes down to prime the diluent (valve 8)
10- Syringe up for the WBC dilution (~2 ml)
Diluent dispensed from outside of the needle (valve 4)

All the fluidics parts are on the right side of the instrument and consist of only three modules :
- Sampling module :
o Rocker (patent pending) : Manages the Sample Needle positioning.
- Syringe module (patent pending) consists of one block :
o Reagent syringes (Diluent, lyse), sampling and air syringes.
o Liquid valve manifold assembly and tubing.
- Counting module :
o WBC and RBC counting chambers and hemoglobin measurement.
o Liquid valve manifold assembly and tubing.

The manifold consists of the fluid valves and the five syringes, syringe block including:
Sample syringe
Lyse syringe
Two waste and vacuum/pressure syringes
Diluent syringe.
The diluent intake and the waste output are also included in this manifold.

3.1. INTRODUCTION
Three boards compose the D3:
- the Main board
- the Preamplifier board
- and the IHM board
- Ensure correct protection is used when replacing the main board or preamplifier board, as
these are sensitive to electro static discharge (ESD).
- Before operating check the earth connection and use the antistatic bag supply with the
board. Please contact your authorized Drew distributor for more information.
- Be careful with the edges of the frame after having removed the covers.
The Main board is located between the hydraulic compartment and the reagent tray.
The board, driven by a 32-bit processor, controls the following modules:
- Sample needle, rocker, syringe block motors.
- Display and keyboard.
- External communications (RS232, Ethernet, …).
- Printer.
- Measurement (Counting, hemoglobin measurement).
- Data processing.
- External barcode reader.

3.2.4 Power supply Module (D3 is supplied with an external power supply module)
- The D3 has been certified with the power supply provided. The use of another external
power supply box may affect performance and will invalidate the Warranty. Please contact
Drew Scientific or authorized Drew Distributor.
4. FLAGS
D3 manages different Flags and Alarms. These Flags allow the user to be alerted if there is a situation which
can affect the quality of results. All of these Flags appear to the right of the result.
In presence of one or more Flags, it is recommended to check the result by manual methods
such as a blood smear.
NOTE : Most of these Flags can be modified by the user (see section 3 of the User’s Manual).

5.1.3. CHECKSUM
For frames with few numbers of lines, the block is finished with an end line containing a checksum. This
checksum is calculated from the beginning of the headline to the end of the line finishing the block.
The algorithm of the calculation for the checksum is :
CRC = 0xFFFF
For each byte
Work on high order byte:
Index = byte XOR CRC
Index = Index AND 000F
CRC = Table(Index) XOR (CRC divided by 16)
Work on low order byte:
Index = byte divided by 16
Index = Index XOR CRC
Index = Index AND 000F
CRC = Table(Index) XOR (CRC divided by 16)
Example in C language:
/*Hash table :*/
static const unsigned short ausCrcTab1[] =
{
0x0000, 0xCC01,0xD801,0x1400,0xF001,0x3C00,0x2800,0xE401,
0xA001,0x6C00,0x7800,0xB401,0x5000,0x9C01,0x8801,0x4400,
};
/* CRC computing */
unsigned short calc_crc(unsigned char *pucData, long lSize)
{
unsigned short usAcc1 = 0xFFFF;
pucData++;
lSize--;
}
return(usAcc1);
}
^ : XOR.
>> : Logical shift right.
& : logical AND.

drop-down menu:
- This display enables modification of the HGB, WBC, RBC and PLT gain
located in the upper window and the counting pulse parameters in the
lower window.
- The modification of one of these parameters must be done in compliance with Drew
Scientific and only after specific training.
- In the case of modification without authorization, Drew Scientific warranty
becomes invalid.

8. MAINTENANCE
The quality and reliability of the results of the D3 are directly linked to the strict adherence to the
maintenance described hereafter.
To perform the maintenance and repair described in this section, it is mandatory to wear
rubber gloves and wash hands with a disinfectant after completion of work.
NOTE : This table is valid for an average number of 50 samples per day. For more, please increase the
maintenance proportionally.

shipments ***
9. REPAIRING
For all the following operations wear rubber gloves and wash hands with a disinfectant after
completion of work.
Be careful with the edges of the frame after removing the covers.
then
- The Reset Cycle will initialise all motors and fluidics into the Stand-by position.
- Before replacing the complete Sampling Module, drain all the tubing :
x Remove the diluent, lyse and cleaner tubes from their bottle
x Perform a PRIME PACK (MAIN MENU / MAINTENANCE / REAGENT PACK)
- Switch the D3 OFF, and disconnect the power supply.
- Remove the Reagent Pack bottle from it’s location

Handling/storage
Never expose the battery to ultrasonic sound.
Exposing the battery to ultrasonic sound may cause short-circuiting because the inside material is broken
into pieces, leading to distortion, leakage, overheating, explosion, or fire.
Never subject the battery to severe shock.
Dropping, throwing or stomping on the battery may cause distortion, leakage, overheating, explosion, or fire.
Disposal
The battery may be regulated by national or local regulation. Please follow the instructions of proper
regulation. As electric capacity is left in a discarded battery and it comes into contact with other metals, it
could lead to distortion, leakage, overheating, or explosion, so make sure to cover the (+) and (-) terminals
with friction tape or some other insulator before disposal.
