Topic 2. The Experience of Going Abroad

1.- Explain in your own words the concept of “Cultural Shock”. (personal answer) cultural shock is
when a person is involved with a new culture, and the differences in the new culture creates a lot
of different emotions an reactions on the person

2.- What are the methods to share your culture? Explain in your own words each one of them In
order to share culture, we can try to start with going over with the stereotipes of the culture

3.- On which Curve Phase you understand the host´s culture and feel part of this new community?
In the adjustment phase

4.- Explain in your own words, what barriers you faced or would you face when going abroad? The
language, the religion, the weather, the food, the social behavior

5.- Explain in your own words, “How you Represent your own Culture”

6.- Mention the Curve Phases and explain in your own words providing an example each of these
phases

The honeymoon phase: it's when you first encounter the new culture, ando You are amazed by the
differences in it, You see the superficial benefits of it

The Hostility stage: it’s when the new culture start to feel unconfortable, when you miss certain
thing from you own culture, the things that you loved from home are not longer there

Humor or recovery phase: it’s the one when you realice this changes are not so bad, when your
mindsets start to change and you are already getting along with all the aspects of the new culture

Adjustment phase: it’s when you finally come to appreciate been in this new culture, when you
start feeling like in home again, when you are not only forming part of the culture, but also the
culture forming part of you

7.- What do you need to do in order to accomplish the challenges of the culture adjustment curve?
Finding new friends, staying in contact with relatives in home, having an open mind, staying
healthy, trying to do new things, keep doing personal hobbies

8.- Mention the obstacles or difficulties you have gone through when visiting a foreign country.
The main concern is always the language barrier, when I went the US I didn’t really had develop
my English speaking all that much, so when I encountered someone with a real conversation I
struggled a lot

finally come to appreciate been in this new culture, when you start feeling like in home again,
when you are not only forming part of the culture, but also the culture forming part of you

friends, staying in contact with relatives in home, having an open mind, staying healthy, trying to
do new things, keep doing personal hobbies

answer) I would try to clarify the stereotypes they might have, and go from that to explain a why
the stereotypes comes to be, and how it’s the reality of the culture

13.- On which Curve Phase do you enjoy the experience of being in a new country and meeting
new people? In the honeymoon phase

14.- Choose any country you would visit or have already visited, what cultural differences did or
would you think you find? How did or would that make you feel? How did or would you overcome
those situations? I would like to go to Spain, I think it’s really interesting to see what we share and
