Practice: Continuous and regular exercise of employment where manual work is done with any necessary material
according to the design of a drawing
Theory: Ability to demonstrate and explain the productions of dexterity on the principles of proportion.

Ground Plan: made by proper successive use of compasses and rule, through which we get outlines for the plane
surfaces of buildings.
Elevation: Picture from the front of a building, set upright and properly drawn in the proportions of the
contemplated work.
Perspective: Method of sketching a front with the sides withdrawing into the background, the lines all meeting in
the center of a circle.

1. Construction of fortified towns and of works for general use in public places,

1.1.1.1. Planning of walls, towers and gates, permanent devices for resistance against hostile attacks

1.1.3. Utilitarian
1.1.3.1. Provision of meeting places for public use (harbors, markets, colonnades, baths, theatres,
promenades, etc.)

All of the abovementioned must be built with due reference to durability, convenience, and beauty.
Durability- if foundations are carried down to the solid ground and materials wisely and liberally selected
Convenience- when the arrangement of the apartments is faultless and presents no hindrance to use, and when each
class of building s assigned to its suitable and appropriate exposure
Beauty- when the appearance of the work is pleasing and in good taste and when its members are in due proportions
according to correct principles of symmetry.
Choice of a very healthy site- Site will be high, neither misty nor frosty, and in a climate neither hot nor
cold, but temperate, without marshes in the neighborhood.
