The Prehistory in England

Situation in England during Prehistory:


- England became an island after the end of last ice age
- First people in England were Homo Sapiens – they were gatherers and hunters
- During the Neolithic period they stated farming and building sedentary dwelings
- Build the coremonial monuments - Stonehenge

STONEHENGE
- Circular arrangement of standing stones built in prehistoric times
BRONZE AGE
- Started about 2500BC
- Represented by Beaker people in England – learned to make bronze things
The Iron age – The Celts
- The Celts lived in tribes in England
- The druids were Celtic priests
- Celts used Bronze and Gold
- They were mainly farmers, but they were ready to fight against the Romans
- They had polytheistic religion
The Romans
- 55BC – first raid
- Julius Caesar came across the city
- The Romans defeated Celts
- 54BC – second raid
- Caesar started the second raid
- The British tribes agreed to pay tributes to Rome and were left in peace
- 43AD – the 3rd attempt
- Romans prepared the 3rd raid during the reign of Claudius
- His aim was to make Britain part of the Roman Empire
- The most famous artifact from Roman period is Hadrian`s wall
Anglo- Saxons
- They came from Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands
- They settled the territory of England
- They were farmers and warriors
- The Angles and Saxons were largest tribe
- Jutes – smaller tribe
The Vikings
- Invaded Europe and Britain between 800 – 1000BC
- They were warriors, sailors from Norway, Sweden, Denmark
- They started migration because of overpopulation and pure lands
