defense. Adcock com-
pleted 10-of-18 for 229
yards and two touch-
downs and 10 rushes
for 128 yards. Eufaula
scored on a four-yard
run by Kaden Bumgar-
ner to take a 19-13 lead.
Then Adcock hit
Kaden Rice on a 41-yard
touchdown strike. The
two-point conversion
failed to make it a 25-13
contest.
The Ironhead defense
continually put pressure
on the Wolves backfield
and forced them to punt
multiple times. Adcock
was on fire as he rolled
out and threw a laser
pass to Rice for a 65-
yard touchdown and the

homa assistant coach
Larry Lacewell traveled
to Eufaula to recruit
Lucious and, although
he had some apprehen-
sion about the young-
ster’s size, he noticed
the younger brothers
and offered the scholar-
ship. Lacewell hoped he
would eventually have
Dewey and Lee Roy
wearing OU crimson.
Lucious exceeded the
expectations of Lace-
well’s first visit, becom-
ing an All-American
and three-year starter.
Dewey and Lee Roy did
follow Lucious to Nor-
man, and both skipped
the freshman squad
to play varsity football
their first season. Lu-
cious earned All-Amer-
ican honors in 1973,
and Lee Roy and Dewey
achieved All-American
status in 1974 and 1975,

proud of how we tackled

had some really hard
tackles and opened up
the door for our line to
the years that Oklahoma
won national champion-
ships. Lee Roy also won
the Outland and Vince
Lombardi trophies in
1975. All three brothers
were also accomplished
students, and Dewey
eventually attained a
doctorate in philosophy.
“No one wouldn’t
have known about the
Selmon brothers if it
wasn’t for Eufaula head
coach Paul Bell,” former
Sooner head coach Bar-
ry Switzer said.
After college Lucious
played in the World
Football League for the
Memphis Southmen.
After one season he re-
turned to OU as an as-
sistant coach. In 1995
he left the Sooners and
became the linebackers
coach for the National
Football League’s Jack-
sonville Jaguars.
The Tampa Bay Buc-
caneers selected Lee
Roy as the first pick of
their new franchise and
the first selection in the
1976 National Football
League (NFL) draft.
While Lee Roy was with
the Buccaneers, the
league named him All-
Pro six times, and he
became the first Tampa

How Little League Coaches

I had the privilege of watching the 8 and

last week.  What stood out to me the most
was coaches DJ Mayes and Casey Lunceford.
These two coaches constantly encouraged
their players. That’s right, they encouraged
their players.  They weren’t yelling at the top
of their lungs at the children and belittling
them.
Not only did they encourage them every
play, but they played every single member
of the team. So many times I have watched
teams winning by 2 touchdowns with 2 min-
utes on the clock and not play those kids on
the sidelines.  Why not? They practiced ev-
ery day just like the others.
Lunceford and Mayes did and I made sure
to tell Casey to keep up doing a wonderful
job. So many times youngsters quit playing a
sport because of how they were treated at the
lower level. So for those parents that have
kids playing on the Eufaula Ironheads 8 and
under team, be reassured that your child is
being coached the right way.
