Topic: Cuban song forms as they relate to the classical guitar.

Approach: I will review Cuban song forms and analyze pieces from famous Cuban classical
guitar composers to gain a better understanding of the different traditional elements in their
pieces. The composers whose pieces will be analyzed are Leo Brouwer, Eduardo Martin,
Walfrido Dominguez, and Carlos Rafael Rivera. I will choose three pieces from each composer,
and try to take from the beginning, middle, and end of their career.

Thoughts/Issues: I believe that this topic is broad enough to provide many sources since I need
to not only research the Cuban song forms, but also the pieces themselves. Since I am working
on a Cuban set of pieces this will help me with interpretation, and hearing the different
influences that these forms have on the pieces. An issue that I am concerned about is not having
enough material on the composer’s pieces themselves since classical guitar is a niche topic in
classical music, and these composers are a niche within a niche.
