Duterte a threat to Philippine democracy
(Rappler)

MANILA, Philippines – Duterte has long been criticize by many due to his way of governing.
His administration poses a threat to the Philippine democracy according to experts due to his
aggressive stunts in implementing any type of government policies.
Experts explain that President Duterte’s impact on democracy was highlighted due to his blunt
support on extrajudicial killings, attacks and threats against dissenting voices, and the weakening
of checks and balance systems which is vital in democracy. His administration openly displays
oppression on the weak setting for example his War on Drug program that killed hundreds of
people without having the right to due process.
Duterte’s aggressiveness causes a decline to democracy because the people fear of getting killed
if ever they will speak what is really on their mind about the administration. For this reason the
administration itself poses a threat to human rights which is why it is often criticize because of
its support on many policies that encourages killings and other human rights violations.
Philippines has been so keen on keeping its democracy as they believe that through democracy
they are heard and is given the freedom to speak their mind and say what they observe is wrong
with the administration and with Duterte’s constant display of promoting extrajudicial killings
and the likes threaten the people that he may be the reason that democracy will end.
There is no doubt that Duterte would do as he promise but his aggressive actions on getting
things done is causing his people to feel threatened that he might turn the country into a nation
that democracy is impossible to achieve.
3. President Duterte’s supporter and President Duterte’s critiques are asked the following
questions: What can you say about the idea of Duterte posing a threat to Philippine
democracy?

The idea itself that our President is a threat to our democracy is absurd so all I can say is that is
merely a fallacy created by his haters to manipulate the people into believing that our president
is a threat to democracy. I do not believe that this idea can be possible because Duterte is only
doing his job as our president by fulfilling what he promised during his candidacy. His War on
Drug was not to promote extrajudicial killings and injustice but to eliminate all the drug users
because he can see that those people are a threat to the safety of his people. –Duterte Supporter

It is not shocking that Duterte’s administration will be a concern to many especially if he himself
is openly talking about killing people who disagree to his policies. His way of governing causes
a misunderstanding to some because of the way he speak even on national television. Duterte
implementing his War on Drug campaign was clearly a way to create fear to his enemy and to
the people that he will not be merciful to someone who disagree with him and the law. Those
attitudes is enough to prove that democracy will decline under his administration and the idea
itself is not impossible. –Duterte crique
